Wwyd, Dr wants me to go to a&e

I've been feeling a bit off colour for a few days, with a bit of a temperature, headachey, sore throat and needing to pee more frequently. Was pretty sure it was a UTI or possibly even a kidney infection, but also maybe a virus of one kind or the other.

Been to walk in centre this afternoon because I thought if it's a UTI I should get it checked really. Did the usual dip test, no infection apparent. Have got a bit of an ache in the kidney region and it was a bit sore when he pressed on my bladder and upper stomach (around the bra line) but otherwise nothing much else. My BP is fine and he recorded my temp as 37.1c (although my skin does feel warmer than usual)

He can't decide what's wrong with me so wants me to go to a&e. I don't think I need to, I don't feel THAT ill. Husband of the opinion I should go if GP said so.

Wwyd?

PS, really hope it is nothing serious by the way!

justasking111 · 25/10/2019 17:48

Please go as someone else said before the drunks arrive. I was there once with son late at night it was awful.

mumwon · 25/10/2019 17:49

while others on this thread may be insulting you - I am concerned because of our experience & yes you may have to wait but honestly bacteremia (the precursor to sepsis) can move fast & cause some awful damage - please go op & don't delay - thank goodness we went when we did = dh recovered well (after lots of iv antibiotics) but lots of people land up with severe side effects - doctor doesn't know what it is but he has concerns - that should tell you enough

You can't help some people can you.. 🤔 🤔
Why ask if you won't listen to the advice..??

Schuyler · 25/10/2019 17:51

Surely it’s better to go and feel silly than die being stubborn, eh? Maybe your GP sees the early signs of something and wants in-depth tests and treatment before you get worse? Please go. Flowers

managedmis · 25/10/2019 17:52

People have been handed their arses on platters for a lot less on here, op. You've been let off lightly.

Go now!

Justaboy · 25/10/2019 17:54

I saw the dr last year with serious lower abdo pain, they thought it might be appendicitis, I went to a&e and it was something else equally serious, a burst ovarian cyst. On that ocassion I felt really ill. I saw a GP today because I thought I had an infection or virus. I don't want to waste a&e time, I don't want to clog up a system to be told yep, it's just a bit of a temperature and it'll sort itself out.

Well you said it;!

I think your GP has every reason why he wants you there, and don't worry re clogging the place up as LOT of less resposible people that you get there with self inflicted booze poisiong, you have every right and reason to be there and if I were your hubby I'd get you there in less time then you'd take to argue it with me:-)

TheFaerieQueene · 25/10/2019 17:57

Tbh OP it would be pretty bloody awful for anyone on a screen to say don’t go to a&e when a doctor, who wouldn’t suggest this lightly, says to go. You might not like it, but there it is. Go or don’t go, we can’t make you, but getting aggressive with people isn’t going to help anyone.

VaguelySkeletal · 25/10/2019 17:57

I'm confused why this Dr says I'm more ill than I say I am. What are a&e going to do for me?

As the parent of a rosy-cheeked, chatty child, who was referred by GP to A&E with fatigue and back/abdominal aching, yet with no fever, no vomiting, and with normal BP, I would go. My dc didn't seem that ill - I had just taken them to the GP as I felt it had been going on for too long. Turned out they had an abscess and were immediately admitted for 5 days of IV antibiotics.

ShirleyPhallus · 25/10/2019 17:59

If the OP gets taken to hospital cos it is something serious she definitely isn’t coming back on now!

aweedropofsancerre · 25/10/2019 17:59

Don’t be an ass and get to a and e. My dad died of UTI related sepsis....

Sotoes · 25/10/2019 18:02

I was left on a trolley in a corridor on a Friday night. They needed my cubicle for a drunk guy handcuffed to a police officer.

Go now OP, please, for your own sake.

HoldMyLobster · 25/10/2019 18:02

The BMJ seems to think an intra-abdominal abscess should be investigated further. I'd get it looked at, personally.

bestpractice.bmj.com/topics/en-us/996

Diagnosis can be confirmed by radiologic studies such as ultrasound or CT scan. CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis is usually more reliable, and provides better delineation of anatomic location and size of intra-abdominal abscess.

Treatment involves adequate source control (abscess drainage) and early appropriate effective antimicrobial therapy.

If untreated, may cause sepsis and septic shock.

NerrSnerr · 25/10/2019 18:03

I would go as early as you can OP. A&E late on a weekend isn't fun. The GP clearly thinks it's worth getting seen today. Best case scenario is that you're fine, he was over cautious and you've had the tests to prove it.

ViciousJackdaw · 25/10/2019 18:05

Please go, especially because of suspected abdo abscess

Three years ago, I was told to go to A&E if 'things got any worse'. I ignored things getting worse. DH ended up calling 999 and it turned out I had peritonitis, sepsis and was about 2 hours away from kicking the bucket.

You really must go, I'd hate for you to end up as ill as I was.

Lhastingsmua · 25/10/2019 18:06

I would go but completely understand why you don’t want to.

Previously I had a cold and randomly had a nose bleed too. This was at 6am when I would have got ready for work, but I felt unwell so called in sick. Then ended up sleeping from like 6am to 6pm, it was weird and I had no energy. When I woke up, I was coughing up brown blood, I just assumed it was from the earlier nose bleed but called 111 to be safe as I felt so lethargic. They asked me to go to A&E where I waited from 8pm to 5:30 to be seen as I (understandably) was triaged as a low priority. Nothing was wrong with me - I would have rather stayed at home and visited my Gp in the morning to be honest!

ragged · 25/10/2019 18:07

I very much doubt I would go to A&E.
GP ruled out UTI & it will probably sort itself.
Hope you feel better soon.

Lhastingsmua · 25/10/2019 18:07

5:30am*

I’m just saying that whilst I think you should go, your reservations are understandable.

Friday nights are busy in A&E too!

Elbowedout · 25/10/2019 18:09

Are you sure the GP is actually sending you yo A&E OP? That would be kind of unusual. More normal would be that GP sees a patient and refers to the appropriate speciality, probably surgery in this case. Some hospitals use A&E as an entry point for all emergency admissions, if they don't have an emergency assessment unit, or if beds are a problem. If that is what is happening here, then you should hopefully pass through the system fairly smoothly. Not that I am saying there won't be a wait - unfortunately most departments are pretty busy - but if you are an "accepted admission for (presumably) surgery" then you shouldn't need to go through triage, being seen by a junior A&E doc, possibly being seen by a more senior A&E doc and THEN referred on to the surgeons as you would if you self presented without going to your GP first.
I am guessing that your GP is concerned enough to feel that another opinion is necessary, so if I were you, I would go. Hopefully it will be nothing serious, in which case they will get you home again as soon as possible. I can pretty much guarantee that with the pressure that hospitals all over the country are under, nobody is likely to admit you to a hospital bed without good reason. But as others have suggested they may well want to do some screening blood tests +/- some imaging. Or you may of course be examined by another doctor, told there is nothing to worry about and be sent home. In which case, yes, your evening will not have been great, but it is better to be safe than sorry isn't it? You were concerned enough to see your GP and they were concerned enough to refer you on, so I would suggest you follow the advice given. I hope you are right and there is nothing to be concerned about though. Get well soon.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 25/10/2019 18:11

Well if you didn't feel shit before, I guess you feel shit now Wink Could be worse, could be AIBU Alpaca, although some people seem to think it is Hmm

I know exactly how you feel, I had pretty much the same scenario a couple of weeks back. I was genuinely convinced the GP was being over cautious, especially at the moment when you see so much stuff along the lines of don't go to A and E unless your head has fallen off (ironically you see this a lot on MN!) I literally went just to keep my GP happy (I love her). I felt a total fraud being at hospital as I really didn't feel ill enough. I apologised profusely to every nurse/doctor...

Well, you know the ending I'm sure BlushGP was right and I was wrong, funnily enough! Weeks later I'm still in bed (missing my DS's important football match) swigging morphine (that I ended up begging for, and being given, literally hours after I said oh I'm fine I really don't need the hospital Hmm) despite being lighthearted, I've actually been very lucky that my doctor was so fab.

You clearly felt ill enough to see the GP (and I'm guessing from your posting you don't do that often!) So you wanted to get medical advice, you have got it - take jt!!!

I hope you're OK and it genuinely is a waste of time for you Smile Please ignore the grumpy fuckers and update so nice people like me know you're OK Brew

Jenniferturkington · 25/10/2019 18:11

I can totally see your point op. You thought you might have a uti and with the weekend looming you wanted it checked in case you needed antibiotics. No uti and not feeling that bad. I probably wouldn’t go to a&e. You can always go with the doctor’s letter if you get worse.

Namechange8471 · 25/10/2019 18:12

My friend had similar symptoms to yourself, thought she had tonsillitis and a stomach bug, said she felt ok.

Turned out she had sepsis.

Thankfully she wasn’t ignorant and listened to the medical professional and she’s alive.

GO!!!!!!

AlexaAmbidextra · 25/10/2019 18:14

I have to ask the obvious. Why go to your GP for advice? Why post on here for advice? What’s the point? You obviously know best so stay at home. In the unlikely event that you die then on your head be it. Confused

Jenniferturkington · 25/10/2019 18:16

But she only went to the gp at all because it’s friday.

DuMondeB · 25/10/2019 18:19

A&E can give you a fast turn around blood test looking for infection markers, I expect that’s why your GP wants you to go.

Blood tests are hugely informative but they take days to arrange and feedback via GP services.
