I've been in my job now a few years. I always loved it but now I'm starting to dislike it. Yesterday was a particularly bad day, I work hard but the impossible is expected at times.

I would just start looking for a new job but I'm going through some medical testing at the moment. This could take another year before I know the results. If it is positive then I have another 5 years before I would have to leave work so in theory I could get a new job now. The only issue is if I'm symptomatic now and have to leave earlier then I won't have the protection I have now having been in my job over 2 years and could be managed our once they found out. I can't see the wood for the trees.

I have been in a very similar situation. From my point of view I felt ok to leave my job because I had the support of my partner (financial and emotional) and because I don’t have children to support financially so didn’t need to worry about that.

Even so it feels very frightening on some days. We don’t know what the future holds and not having job security is a worry.

I would say it depends on your circumstances.

Also, would a new job come with more money? Would you be able to save substantially to cushion yourself against the possibility of having to leave the job early?

I need to work we can't afford me not to and I do like working. I doubt there would be any more money in a new job.

I think if I were you I'd stick it out until you have a clear diagnosis so you can better plan for your future. You need to change your mindset regarding your current job. You're possibly already under additional stress with the medical issues you're facing, and can't see the wood for the trees. Do your employers know about this testing? Keeping it from them is also stressful.
My DS was diagnosed with MS. She suspected for a while that she had it, but didn't tell her employer, or indeed anyone apart from her DH. She didn't actually like her job, but thought she had to stick it out until she couldn't do it anymore. Once she told her employer or her diagnosis, they were able to change her duties due to disability adjustments and she was able to work with them for a few more years, doing a job she had begun to enjoy. She then went part time until she eventually had to stop work.
You have a lot on your plate, and would possibly benefit from talking to someone who has been in you position. Good luck, OP.

No I haven't told anyone in work, or actually anyone except my family. I'm worried about their reaction. I have a senior position and need to be capable. I'm worried they will demote me if they find out.

I think if I knew for certain how long the process would take it would help but it's so slow waiting times are horrendous.

Shameful bump. Blush

Hi there. Stepping aside from the medical issue (though I wish you the very best), can you do anything about your current work situation? How might you tackle whatever has made you go from loving it? Sounds like the workload is a problem - can you ask your managers what they want you to prioritise, given that no-one can achieve the impossible? Definitely don't risk your health by overworking.

Straycation · 25/10/2019 18:45

The workload has always been high but now more and more keeps being added.

Is there anything you can do to challenge this? If not, the heavier workload becomes the norm and then more is piled on, and repeat. Is there a way you can explain that it can't all be done?
