What time is evening rush hour?

What time do you think of as evening rush hour?

I said 4-5 is peak round where we live.

DH said he's always thought rush hour was 5-6 but can't name a single person who isn't home by 5pm!

So, come and join us in our tedious debate of the evening..

There are too many people on the roads...from my experience the rush hour starts earlier and finishes later at both ends of the day.

Danglingmod · 24/10/2019 19:14

There are also a LOT of wealthy or non-working retired people where I live because actually in the middle of the day, it's very, very busy driving around our city and both the town centre and out of town shopping is just heaving all day every day.

Occasionally we have a tractor rally. Usually on Boxing Day.

Apart from that, I can’t say we have a rush hour.

SoyDora · 24/10/2019 19:20

5-6.30ish.
I also don’t know anyone who’s home by 4. I do know some teachers, but they tend to stay late to do marking etc. Most shops don’t close at 4 do they? I do know someone who works in local govt, they work a 9-5.

ForalltheSaints · 24/10/2019 19:22

In Guernsey it is so short that one of my relatives used to call it a 'rush minute'!

Usually 5-6 in many places I've known.

Danglingmod · 24/10/2019 19:22

No, shops don't close at 4, but most only run a skeleton staff for the first and last hours. Few retail contracts are 37.5 hours now. And many local govt workers get flexi time, so starting early, short lunch break, finish early seems to be a standard pattern in both big councils in our city.

PatriciaHolm · 24/10/2019 19:35

To which I would say: do you not know anyone who works in a school, a shop, local govt, a hospital (nurse handover in our hospital is 2pm), fabrication/engineering (usually 7am start, 3/4pm finish)?

Well, I know plenty of people who work in schools, but they don't get home for 5! Others - no I don't think so. Actually - a midwife - but her shifts are all over the place so I never think of that as a 9-4 type job, which is what I was thinking about when I said I didn't know anyone who got home by 4. I would say the vast number of people whose jobs I know anything about are finance/consulting/lawyer types.

In Dublin city it's 4pm to 7pm in the evening

shearwater · 24/10/2019 19:39

Depends on the area. The worse traffic locally is 4.30-5.30. Train commuters from London start getting home about 5.30 onwards but they aren't adding to the traffic much. On Friday it's 4pm onwards for rush hour as locals seem to leave work early.

trinity0097 · 24/10/2019 19:40

Where I work in Surrey it’s between around 3pm and 7pm

adaline · 24/10/2019 19:43

I don't know anyone who finishes work that early!

Around here, rush hour is between 4.30-6pm.

Mumista · 24/10/2019 20:02

I work 8 til 4 to avoid the worst of rush hour, but still find myself sitting in traffic, especially in the evening. I'd say 4 til 6.

Gojojogogogo · 24/10/2019 20:11

My mum would say it is 3-7pm and will not leave the house between those hours has
Fwiw my husband and I both work in construction and are both home before 5

Wizzbangpop · 24/10/2019 22:14

Of the people I know I am in the minority who finishes work at 4 and is back home by 4:10. Either they finish at 4 but have a long commute or finish at 5/6 and have a short commute

SoyDora · 24/10/2019 23:01

DH finishes at 6ish (often later) and has a 2 hour commute!

Christieee · 25/10/2019 12:39

5-6 here. I dont finish till 11:00pm 🙈

Ravenrob · 25/10/2019 12:40

About 4.45 - 5.45 but also 2.45 - 3.30 when the schools are finishing.
