What time is evening rush hour?

What time do you think of as evening rush hour?

I said 4-5 is peak round where we live.

DH said he's always thought rush hour was 5-6 but can't name a single person who isn't home by 5pm!

So, come and join us in our tedious debate of the evening..

5-6.

Runningsmooth · 24/10/2019 16:28

Here it is 4.15 to 5.15 with little traffic either side.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 24/10/2019 16:38

The bus lanes can only be used by buses between 16.30 and 19.00, so that's rush hour(s) here.

LeftoverPizza · 24/10/2019 16:40

4-5 here, though there’s not much traffic

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 24/10/2019 16:40

5 - 7pm where I am - there's a bit of congestion around 3:30 - 4:30 too for school traffic, but the evening rush is definitely later.

What do your friends/family do that they are all home for 5pm? I think most jobs are still 8:30/9 - 5/5:30, so I expect most people would be leaving just then.

Sparklingbrook · 24/10/2019 16:42

I would say 4.30-6.30 around here. I don't know anyone that's home by 5pm.

HeddaGarbled · 24/10/2019 16:42

5-6 here - South East urban

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 24/10/2019 16:42

TBH in the city where I live it tends to be pretty thick from the school run up to 6.30, but the worst standing traffic is 5-6.

PatriciaHolm · 24/10/2019 16:43

5-7 ish - commuterville. I don't know anyone who is home by 5 unless they work from home!

glitterelf · 24/10/2019 16:44

5-6 here is the general hour but can span for much longer due to the M1 always being clogged

shumway · 24/10/2019 16:45

5-7.

NannaNoodleman · 24/10/2019 16:47

Oh god! Am I going to have to concede to DH!

Nobody is home by 5pm unless they work an early shift or have flexible hours and can leave very early. 5pm is the earliest standard knocking off time. I'd say 5-7pm but 5-6 is heaviest.

LIZS · 24/10/2019 16:50

4-6

Unshriven · 24/10/2019 16:51

6 -7.30pm

London-Essex.

FredaFox · 24/10/2019 16:51

Don’t know anyone home before 6 at the very earliest
I’d say rush hour is 5-7

BuildBuildings · 24/10/2019 16:51

What kind of jobs do people do where they are all home by 5? Out of genuine interest.

NannaNoodleman · 24/10/2019 16:51

Allied Health Professionals, school staff, engineering, gardeners/handy persons, logistics...

We know lots of shift workers, doctors, lawyers, farmers, etc who work crazy hours and never see a rush hour.

NannaNoodleman · 24/10/2019 16:52

I worked in community and now work in a school. Everyone worked 8-4.

OP posts:
ExpletiveDEVILighted · 24/10/2019 16:53

I'd say 5-6.

Noflora · 24/10/2019 16:54

In our town the local paper writes about the "evening rush" as it lasts much longer than an hour, 4.30 to 6.30. The hour 5-6pm is peak misery.

NumberblockNo1 · 24/10/2019 16:55

Wow finishing by 4 is amazing. I want your life!

BuildBuildings · 24/10/2019 16:57

Maybe it depends on the area then if lots of that type of work is available where you are then it is possibly earlier. It does build wher I am by 4 but peaks between 5 and 6. Its still busy at 6.30 but by 7 clearing up. In London on public transport I feel it stays busy until 7 at least.

WWlOOlWW · 24/10/2019 16:58

4pm till 8pm.

4.pm is the school run which spills over to the work rush hour/s.

London

Danglingmod · 24/10/2019 17:08

It must depend by city.

It's definitely got earlier in my city and the busiest time seems to be 4.30-5.30.

Most people in my city work in engineering, local govt, retail or office work like estate agents/solicitors and I think flexible/compressed working hours are definitely a thing in the former two sectors and shorter shifts a thing in the latter two, meaning that people finish earlier than they used to a decade ago. Think how many shops now just have 1-2 staff for the last hour instead of 10+. I'm sure that's contributed to rush hour being earlier in the evening.

Equally, people seem to start work earlier these days. I leave home at 7.15 and it's busy already. It used to be 8-9am busiest in the morning.
