Any motorcyclists about?

It's just a quick question really.

I've paid for a course for DH to get his full motorbike licence (for Christmas, he has no idea) and I was thinking or buying some kit - trousers, jacket etc. I'm torn though, should I get a suit (trousers and jacket) which is armoured and seems decent quality but isn't leather..... or leather? The suit is the same price as just the leather jacket. Or would you rather choose your own kit as opposed to someone else choosing it, is it an individual preference?

Thanks for any and all advice!

Leather is always best which is why it's so expensive but armoured textile is fine if that's your preference. I would probably go for the leather or give him some vouchers for a store near you and let him choose his own as the fit is the most important thing. If the armour doesn't sit in the right place then it's not that useful so best to let him try some on.

I agree on vouchers. My DH has variety of kit he wears in different weathers and for different type of journeys. It's a lot of personal preference.

Another vote here for vouchers as once hes got his license he will know which look he is going some riders go for armoured textile which is lighter to wear but the protection is centred on where the armour is, others go for full leather which is heavier to wear but gives better protection on the parts that are not armoured,, be aware bike gear isnt cheap

Thanks for the advice, I'll leave it and he can sort his own kit. I just want Christmas to be here already!!

Consider what it'll be used for. Commuting in the wet? Get the cordura stuff. Fun on dry days only? Leathers. Track days? Accredited zip together leathers.

Get him a subscription to Ride magazine or similar?

pooopypants · 03/11/2019 18:22

Ooo a magazine subscription might be a good idea, and that would maybe be the delivery vessel for the voucher itself!!!

Vouchers. Leather is better protection in accidents but holds water and becomes heavy and takes ages to dry out. Other materials are not as protective but are better in the wet. None are waterproof though unless you get actual waterproofs overalls like used in fishing.

My dh prefers none leather for warmth.

Lots of Bikers like to get protective clothing with custom made kevlar protection that fits in pockets inside the clothing. Better to either give him cash or vouchers so he can get what he wants.
