The genetic lottery

Looking at the pic of Amanda Holden in the Daily Mail today, with her husband and kids, it struck me that the whole family is very good looking.
I don’t like Amanda (although sorry to hear she’s broken her leg) and her husband isn’t my cup of tea, but they’re admittedly both attractive and their daughters have clearly struck the genetic lottery. With two such good looking parents it’s no surprise they’re both very pretty girls.
Having said that, I’d still rather not have Amanda for a mum and that my own parents were very ordinary.

We have a conventional idea of what is 'good looking' (which might have - and actually would have been - different a few hundred years ago). Two 'good looking' parents will usually have a 'good looking' kid. Cleopatra was considered the most beautiful woman in the world; if you google reconstructions of her, you might see what I mean.

Either be your own person, or a slave to the time. (I advise the former!)

Oh ffs, I’m just saying that with two good looking parents, it’s no surprise the kids are good looking too.
I find it quite offensive to be called creepy, actually. I’m a straight woman in my 50s with two daughters of my own who I consider pretty gorgeous. You make me sound like a pervy old man.
I don’t know, Amanda, no, but I’m just saying I don’t particularly like what I’ve seen of her, just like some people don’t like Meghan Markle,
Catherine Zeta Jones, Holly Willoughby or any number of famous people they’ve never met.

Me and my OH are very 'average' looking but have three very good looking children.
Not just me thinking that - it has been commented on by many people.
I now suspect that my husband has slept with Amanda Holden!

Actually those are all women so in the interests of equality I’ll give...oh, let’s say, Daniel Craig, Matt Baker and Jeffrey Archer as examples of famous people not everyone may like too.

Lol. You’re the only one sounding like a pervy old man. Why are you judging one woman, one husband and a couple of children based purely on their looks? Pretty sure there may be some humans involved here.

It interesting that some people seem to strike the genetic lottery. Assuming by 'genetic lottery', we mean good looks, and not stunning intellect, physical ability, or peak health, of course.

The Clements twins, for example, are exquisite looking (possibly compounded by the fact that they're twins), while their parents are 'just' good looking.

It's like they're a vastly improved version of their parents' combined genes.

Oh give it a rest Fin.
I don’t judge people on their looks. I was unlucky myself in the genetic lottery. My dds are adopted, and I do sometimes muse on how different they’d look if I’d given birth to them.
I also muse on how good looking people generally have an easier ride in life. I think it’s been proved that they’re more likely to succeed at a job interview over a plainer candidate for example.
Amanda’s younger daughter interviewed Angeline Jolie, I think it was, and she’s only about seven, so I guess that got me thinking she was bound to end up a tv presenter. Again easier for kids with a parent in showbiz.
Meanwhile my oldest dd, having left school with a couple of GCSEs and then having a baby at 17, has just started an apprenticeship and I’m so proud of her, of both of them actually, for overcoming an awful start in life.
I wasn’t trying to be nasty or controversial and certainly not creepy, and I really think you should apologise for your comment.
However don’t bother. An apology that has to be asked for is worthless.

my mom made it very clear to consider genetics when marrying and having children.
for some people it's a priority and works out well.
her list included height consideration, all immediate family illnesses, teeth, skin and hair plus much more.

One of my biggest regrets is that I didn’t have the opportunity to have DC with someone better looking. DH is a good person but has below average looks. I know how much of a difference good looks can make to your life and I’m praying DC got a freak combo of genes that results in beauty.

That photo has at least 3 filters on it. Am not convinced they did win the genetic lottery - but am sure their parents’ money definitely helped their looks. Anyone can be beautiful when they can get all the dental care / teen facials / hair and make up / styling they need at the drop of a hat.
