Average speed checks

Anyone been caught out by these on motorway? Rigidly stuck to 50 mph on M27 roadworks with regular yellow cameras monitoring average speed, and was overtaken by a number of cars and coaches as I bimbled along being good , I so want to believe they will get a ticket !

When you say 'stuck to 50 mph' do you mean that your speedo said 50?

If so, you were probably doing about 46 mph, so those people overtaking you might have been going faster, but not more than 50 actual MPH plus whatever extra margin they put on.

I normally set my cruise control to 54 mph on 50 mph sections and have never had a ticket.

I do know that Ed Balls was caught at least twice on the motorway between his constuency where I live and his home which is a few junctions along the motorway, so they do catch people sometimes.

Yep cruise control set to 54.

I drive down a dual carriageway that has average speed check cameras everyday to and from work. There is a section where it drops from 50 to 40mph and I regularly forget to slow down (bad signage plus I just go with the flow of the other traffic) and I have never been fined.

M27 is a nightmare. It was utterly clear the other night and I felt so frustrated

basicbitch16 · 21/10/2019 17:05

I work in Fareham so touch on this daily & that's bad enough! I usually hover at 52mph & been fine so far x

I entered an Average Speed Check zone on the M1. Shortly after, I pulled into the Services. An hour or so later, I rejoined the M1 and soon exited the Average Speed Check zone.

A friend, who was with me, wondered if I might get a ticket for driving too slowly. It hasn't shown up yet (after two years).

wonderstuff · 21/10/2019 17:06

One of my husband's colleagues got a ticket, he was baffled because he'd slowed down before the camera!

Seeline · 21/10/2019 17:08

My new sat nav actually works this out for me. It's like magic Grin

Mustbetimeforachange · 21/10/2019 17:10

I know someone who got one on the M1 about 3 years ago. Never heard of anyone else. I do stick to them though. Thank goodness for cruise control.

beckyvardy · 21/10/2019 17:15

M62. Both my partner and me have been caught out there

issano · 21/10/2019 17:18

I regularly use the m60/62 which up until a few months ago was average speed and used to set my cruise control to 54 and never got a ticket. I always used to notice trucks went the fastest out of anyone so as they're limited to 56 I reckon you could do 56 without getting caught as truckers obviously aren't getting loads of tickets, I never dared try 56 though.

ginandbearit · 21/10/2019 18:45

Thanks ...yes was on my speedo .(no cruise control ) and drifted into 55 at times ...was v frustrating on a Sunday morning with no work being done

I don't think they're turned on all the time, but you obviously never know when they are.

I used to totally ignore them (many years ago now!) and carry on at 70mph, or more. In around 2 years of driving like that I only got caught once

safariboot · 21/10/2019 18:55

Not been caught by them or any other speed camera, but then I do make an effort to stick to the speed limit. No cruise control in my car, gotta do it the old fashioned way. As far as I know my car's speedo is pretty accurate, it matches what those signs that display your speed say and last I checked it matched a GPS speed reading.

Though I don't like doing 40 or 50 on a clear motorway when traffic is habitually overtaking me. It feels weird, bordering on unsafe, and makes me wonder if I didn't miss a sign ending the speed limit.

BringOnTheScience · 21/10/2019 19:18

I live right by a road with average speed cameras & know plenty of local people who have been caught. Some even stupid enough to get caught twice.
