Which cloth pads do you recommend?

I'm boycotting always. And I figure I should finally take the leap into re-useables. What do you recommend?
And can I wash them with cloth nappies or on a separate wash?

Minivivi or precious stars if you want a budget option

And yes they can be washed with nappies or anything else you are putting in the washing machine.

EmrysAtticus · 20/10/2019 12:17

Minivivvi are fab as are Imse Vimse. I chuck in with my normal washes while on and then at the end put them all in one 60 degree wash with Violets Mineral Bleach.

Batinahat · 20/10/2019 12:25

I have used cheeky wipes and found them to be good. Buy some different ones to try and see how you get on - I found the more fleecy grey material wasn't as comfortable for me although I liked it being dark as doesn't stain too much. The cream coloured cotton ones I found more comfortable but they are harder to bring up totally unstained. I soak mine in cold water (Tupperware with lid on tucked away in bathroom cupboard out of the way) then wash as normal at 30. If I don't soak them I do a cold wash in the machine then chuck in with normal wash. I am still trying and learning!

hiccups and juice are my favourite. Ive got quite a few brands, but I love these the best. Really soft and comfortable

Ariela · 20/10/2019 13:59

Another vote for Imse Vimse

june2007 · 20/10/2019 14:01

I got some from TJ nappies, they are fab. I din.t like fuzzibunze as the material is too slippy and they move about too much. Also how about making your own?

june2007 · 20/10/2019 14:02

Earthwise girls have a variety to choose from.

xyzandabc · 20/10/2019 14:04

I use Imse Vimse and really like them. Never tried any others though so nothing to compare to

PhonicTheHedgehog · 20/10/2019 14:05

I think I’m going to buy the imsevimse starter kit in black when I get paid. I was already getting a bit fed up of disposables on my ageing vulva but the Always inability to understand their customer has been the final straw.

ThreeLittleDinos · 20/10/2019 14:29

Imse Vimse are getting a lot of votes!
Thank you, I'll get some of those to try first. I do have some disposables to use up - so don't need to buy all at once! So I'll just chuck in nappy wash, which is cold wash, 60, rinse and that'll be fine?

@PhonicTheHedgehog I was getting tired of disposables too. They always make me feel a bit dried out so hoping that'll change with re-useables. Now always are now denying female biology. It's starting to feel like women don't even exist or you aren't a real woman if you're born with a vagina and identify as a woman. I just can't buy them anymore, it's given me that final push into re-useables! If it wouldn't be so wasteful I'd throw them all out.

The blood won't stain the nappies or anything? Can put on a rinse first if needed. Just want to check I'd be washing correctly

I have black bamboo ones and they just get chucked in a hot wash with other things. No issues with staining. Unbelievably low maintenance.

PhonicTheHedgehog · 20/10/2019 17:13

Just looking at the Imse Vimse website.

Look at the screenshot. The link I’ve centered in the middle of the page. Do you think that’s mens short for menstruating or for men’s?

AntennaReborn · 20/10/2019 17:19

I have not tried pads yet, but I have been using period underwear for the last few cycles and I am so impressed I will never buy disposable pads again!

I will be keeping an eye on this thread for pad recommendations

Flowersonthewall · 20/10/2019 17:25

I'd really recommend the underwear cheeky wipes do knickers and they really are great. Last all day just rinse them in cold water and fling in the normal dark wash. Just don't tumble dry them.
I had the reusable pads and unfortunately it managed to get stuck in the washing machine and had to get an engineer out to fix it Blush

Sparrowlegs248 · 20/10/2019 17:34

I like Honour your flow, they used to do a 10% discount of you quoted mumsnet at checkout. I've heard good things about imse vimse too so might try those.

I like the shape and style of the HYF ones, they don't have wings that are the full length of the pad of that makes sense.

bellinisurge · 20/10/2019 17:36

Precious Stars budget range to start. Modibodis period pants are pricey but good.
I've just made a small set of Halloween themed ones for my dd using either Halloween material fat quarters or a pair of her old pj's as a topper, zorb and an old cotton sheet as the core and polar fleece for the backer. Customised to her preferred size and thickness There are loads of patterns available online.
Dead easy to wash - shove a used one in a wet bag until end of cycle. Then rinse out most of the blood under a cold tap. Put a bit of stain remover on - I use Ecover. Shove in the wash on normal with a scoop of Oxyclean in the dispenser thing. Then air dry. No stains and these have been washed at least 8 times - dd is on her 8th period and now refuses disposables.

Sparrowlegs248 · 20/10/2019 17:39

I've just looked at imse vimse, and realise that the wing and pad are all one piece. The HYF ones I have, are made with the wings stitched on separately, and I find they sit better like that.

SarahTancredi · 20/10/2019 17:42

Unfortunate imse vimse went woke . Shame as their pads are fab.

Cheeky wipes also decided to remove the word woman when they advertised their first period starter kit.

Earthwise girls have a nice range

Also try luxury moon they have loads aswell

galvantula · 20/10/2019 17:51

I've got some cheeky wipes bamboo + minky panty liners/small pads. They're v pretty and nicely made, but I didn't like the feeling of the bamboo surface. I decided I wanted soft cotton ones.

I got some Imse Vimse cotton liners to try. They are really soft and nice. I then got the starter pack in black cotton flannel, with a few extra normal size pads and some black liners.

They've been great, really comfy and feel much nicer than the plastic disposables.

I give mine a quick pre wash with some hand wash liquid, then put them in the mesh bag from the kit and just wash in with whatever wash is going on (without fabric softener).

However ... After I bought them I was a bit disappointed to find out they're a bit reluctant to use the word woman, preferring person. See attached screenshot. :(

She/he.... ? Trying my best not to be ignorant but surely a "he" can't menstruate?

Sparrowlegs248 · 20/10/2019 17:56

Or do they mean female to male, who still has periods? I thought they would still be she. I'm not up to speed with this, clearly.

galvantula · 20/10/2019 17:57

It's apparently to be inclusive of women who identify as men but still have periods. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Beamur · 20/10/2019 18:04

I'd be interested in recommendations for any reusables that have a cotton (or similar) layer next to the skin. Tried some with microfleece but really didn't like them.

ThreeLittleDinos · 20/10/2019 18:10

And imse vimse are removed from the basket.... It's too far. Periods are something that happen to women, it makes me angry they'd dare deny it's biologically a woman's thing. It's not like it's our favourite time of the month, but there's nothing masculine about a period.

Lots of toiletries are described as men. It's either for men or gender neutral. Women's rights, safety, fairness in sports and what it means to be a woman is being stripped from us. This doesn't happen to mens products. With this and the climate crisis, it feels like the bloody end of times. Pun intended.

Going to look at other suggestions once smalls are in bed. But I'm liking the sound of earth wise girls, I just want period pads made for girls/women, you know, the people who actually get periods, it's a feminine thing.
