Which cloth pads do you recommend?

I'm boycotting always. And I figure I should finally take the leap into re-useables. What do you recommend?
And can I wash them with cloth nappies or on a separate wash?

I’m annoyed, I liked the look of the Imse ones as they’re black and can be washed at 60.

galvantula · 20/10/2019 18:16

Yup if I buy more in future I'll be looking for another maker of cotton flannel ones. It's a shame as they are nice. But wtf eh? :(

GeriAtric · 20/10/2019 20:15

I'm watching this thread with interest. I'd like to start using reusables and would prefer to buy from a company that isn't afraid to say that their products are for women and girls.

MissisBee · 20/10/2019 20:23

I've tried cheeky wipes, bloom & Nora and honour your flow. HYF are by far my favourite - the other two went a bit stiff after a few washes; these are lovely and soft, and a good fit. They're more pricey, but they seem to do a flash sale quite often and I think they're worth a bit extra

ThreeLittleDinos · 20/10/2019 20:39

Honour your flow, Eco Femme and Earthwise girls all look like good options. As far as I can tell they're all for female women. Open to any more feedback or suggestions, I can't order until pay day anyway!

I'm menopausal or peri-menopausal, and for the last few months Always panty liners which I've used forever are irritating the hell out of me. They've changed or I have...I don't have periods as I have the mirena in but I use liners because my pelvic floor is fucked. I think I would prefer a set that are cotton, will have a look at some of the suggestions.

bingspando · 20/10/2019 21:24

Reading with this with interest and disdain that so many companies are denying that periods are a woman thing.
I have really heavy periods- gushing, sometimes clotty blood. How well do reusables cope with really heavy flow?
And the pants- how do they work? I've always been a Tampax/ always ultra back up girl but think it's time to move on.

Sparrowlegs248 · 20/10/2019 21:33

@bingspando I had over a year of ridiculously heavy periods. No disposable pad could cope with a flood. The honour your flow large pads were really good. I used them at night and on heavier days, then the heavy flow pads at less heavy times.

Sparrowlegs248 · 20/10/2019 21:37

I've just checked, and actually I don't think I have the "mega pads" I think I have regular and full flow. The full flow I found were enough, but it's good to know there's a step up.

I got a starter pack but don't use the liners at all so maybe that's not for everyone.

MrsPnut · 20/10/2019 21:39

If you have a sewing machine then definitely make some yourself. I have just made some using 3D zorb, PUL backed fleece and brushed cotton and they have cost me about £30 to make about 18 pads and only stopped because I ran out of fleece.
The double layer ones can cope with the heaviest overnight flow with no leaks and they are so comfortable.
I just have a bucket in the bathroom with a lid and then wash them in a towel wash.

PhonicTheHedgehog · 20/10/2019 21:53

Do you have a pattern for them mrspnut?

When you’re using the PUL does the shiny, slippery side go inside the pad or does it go onto your knickers?

And how do you attach the poppers?!

I like the sound of the wool backed ones from HYW as the idea of PUL makes me think of the covers of 1970 nappies. Sweaty, Crunchy and noisy. I do wonder if the wool back ones leak though?

Sparrowlegs248 · 20/10/2019 21:58

I have some some from HYF with pul. It's inside, and you don't notice it there. I've just ordered a couple of new ones from them.

A sew yourself kit Smile

goldplatedtoilet · 20/10/2019 22:30

@bingspando

I find cloth is 100 times better at dealing with flooding than disposables, more so if you buy something with a bamboo velour/wicking jersey top
I also got some mahoosive 16 inch overnight pads custom made. 16 inches in a disposable and you're into incontinence pad territory which I used to use before switching to cloth.

bingspando · 20/10/2019 22:49

Thanks @nottalotta and @goldplatedtoilet - I will have a proper look into these!

MrsPnut · 21/10/2019 06:37

I used a free pattern from www.facebook.com/groups/KaitunaCreationsPadPatternGroup/
The PUL goes inside and it doesn’t crinkle at all, they just feel soft. I bought a popper kit from amazon with a tool to attach them but some I cocked up and the wings are too short so instead I have sewn on a button and a loop of elastic.

TheJoxter · 21/10/2019 06:45

Honour your flow have 20% off on sundays between 8-9pm. I have the wool backed ones and I love them

TheScruffyDog · 21/10/2019 08:03

Watching with interest, boycotting always and have fancied using cloth for a while.

Jeslan · 21/10/2019 08:37

Hi,
Im working at ImseVimse and I'm happy that you are discussing our products, and our brand. ImseVimse is a swedish brand, founded 30 years ago. The word "Mens" that sneaked in the middle of the screenshot is actually a swedish word that did not get translated. Mens is the swedish word for period, a bit confusing... So it has nothing to do with men who menstruate. :)
@PhonicTheHedgehog
And when it comes to be more including, we usually don't write that women menstruate, we feel that the word people are more including. This because all people who have periods are not labeling themselves as women nor men. Non-binary is a spectrum of gender identities that are not exclusively masculine or feminine‍—identities that are outside the gender binary.
We don't want to get stuck on terms, we want to offer environment friendly products that good for your and for the climate. I hope you understand that we are not excluding women, its the opposite we are including everyone that experience having period. My mother language is not English so please be patient with my English. I hope I have made it a bit clearer. Wish you a great day from a rainy Sweden. :)

bellinisurge · 21/10/2019 08:42

Dear @Jeslan , thank you for taking the time. Biological women menstruate (unless there is a health problem or, like me, they have been through the menopause). You don't know what is in my head; what I think about regarding my sexuality - that's none of your business and I don't expect you to comment on it. but you know that I menstruate or used to. Don't waste your time trying to work out what's going on in my head. Because that is not relevant to the operation of my uterus.
Thank you.

SarahTancredi · 21/10/2019 09:01

jeslan

I was disappointed that I didnt get a response to my email. If you were so sure you were being kind and exclusive then why was I ignored?

You dont menstruate with your identity. You menstruate due to biology. People dont die in.period huts or miss school due to period poverty. Women and girls do.

I.hope you understand that when basics like that are ignored then it makes us wonder what else is ignored or overlooked when it comes to products that are meant to be designed for women. We arent willing to take a chance on something that has no idea who they are designed for.

SarahTancredi · 21/10/2019 09:11

And what hurts the most is , when it comes to choosing who to exclude, throw under a bus or ignore, everyone suddenly knows who the woman is then. It's really frustrating when a product that is only ever used by females and we must be the biggest source of your income, well our name for our sex class is to offensive to use

ThreeLittleDinos · 21/10/2019 09:33

Everything SarahTancredi said!
Unless your company admits that identity isn't what makes you menstruate, it's biology and it's a woman or girl that can, then I cannot support your company. It's disgraceful.

How are girls and women supposed to be empowered when it's being hidden and camouflaged that women are the only ones who menstruate? It's so depressing, in my life time I've never felt women's rights were a huge issue and hadn't really considered myself a feminist. Until now. I will not support a business that actively discourages women feeling strong and empowered, and acts as though it is something to hide. Women and girls menstruate, that's who needs empowerment. Periods are still something to be ashamed of for many women and girls even in the UK, not alone 3rd world counties. Girls and women die due to period huts, girls and women loose out on education. A period is a joke to many boys and men, if a woman or girl gets accused of being on her period, their argument or feelings loose credibility. It's something to be embarrassed about.

Make your products for girls and women and I'll buy them.
