Universal credit benefit cap

Can anyone tell me if this sounds right please.

So I've split up with my children's dad and I'm due my first payment of uc this week and I've just had a look to see how much I'll be getting. It looks like the benefit cap is there and I've looked on the part where it asks for previous earnings and it looks like it is wrong on the amount earned. I didn't understand this when it asked so I called them up and a guy helped me but he's put that we both earned less than £430 a month? That isn't true ex dp was self employed and earned over £47,000 last year, he was bringing home at least £720 a week. I haven't worked since 2014 do you think it's worth calling them tomorrow and explains this. I don't understand the benifet cap I've looked it up but I can't make sense of it.

So can someone explain it to me, if I didn't work but exdp did and earned all that will thhe benefit cap still be applied? Thanks

Benefit cap is applied if your total benefit amount exceeds the limit.

Previously reported earnings wont impact

They usually send you something on your to do list asking about previous earnings of you and your ex partner. If you have had earnings above a certain point in the past 12 months I think you are exempt. I would ring them as it doesn't sounds correct that the cap has been applied. Child benefit is included in the cap.

Also if anyone in the family is disabled then that will exempt you from the cap.

Thank you @Babyroobs thankfully no disabilities. Yes the previous earnings thing is what I got in my to do list, I hadn't worked bu exdp did and was supporting us. I'll contact them in the morning and see what they say.
