Next door getting loft done, apparently under act it's our right to get independent surveyor as well but would it be structural engineer or surveyor.

We do have cracks on other side of house, they said we could use thier surveyor but I think independent is better.

We have used an independent party wall surveyor

So that's the specific title of the person we use...

That's what I put into Google and it brought up a list that we chose off

I'd say Structural Engineer.

We had someone do this next to one of our rented houses and their suryevor was there at the time wasnt that impressed with his knowlege:(

Is party wall not general surveyor then? Eg we have some strange damp on party wall, will party wall be able to assess that and next doors work...

Or structural engineer? But will structural engineer look at stuff...

Hello, Steve the party wall surveyor here - you will need a party wall surveyor, sometimes these are also structural engineers but not often. For a simple loft conversion having a structural engineer would bring little benefit - if it was complicated, a basement for instance the party wall surveyor would often bring in a structural engineer to assist him or her. Google party wall surveyors or use the RICS Find a Surveyor service, i would recommend using a properly experienced chartered surveyor.
