I have just found out I will have quite a bit of time next week that I don't usually have and would love to spend some of it reading. Please recommend a book I can lose myself in!

What do you like? If you’ve watched the handmaid’s tale then The Testaments is excellent

Igottastartthinkingbee · 16/10/2019 20:29

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. I was sad to finish it.

Downunderduchess · 16/10/2019 20:31

The Husbands Secret by Liane Moriarty.

I read Jamaica Inn in three sittings recently. An oldie but absolutely compelling.

onlyhereforthefood · 16/10/2019 20:41

Another vote for Eleanor Oliphant- it wasn't at all what I was expecting but I could not stop reading it!

catwithnohat · 16/10/2019 20:45

A Treachery of Spies .... bought on a whim (buy one get another half price) Brilliant read.

Justawaterformeplease · 16/10/2019 20:45

Little Fires Everywhere - raced through that.

KTD27 · 16/10/2019 20:45

Anything by lianne Moriaty.

Somebodystired · 16/10/2019 20:46

A Thousand Ships. It is perfect!

missyB1 · 16/10/2019 20:46

Anything by Liane Moriarty, Amanda Prowse or Lisa Jewells.

countdowntonap · 16/10/2019 20:48

Currently reading The Farm by Joanne Ramos, and getting through 6-8% a day (based on Kindle). Previously read Claire North 84K, which is one of the best books I’ve read. Both great if you like Margaret Atwood.

AnneTwackie · 16/10/2019 20:49

Gone Girl for a thriller
On earth we are briefly gorgeous for thinking
We are called to rise for an easy but thought provoking read
All the light we cannot see for pure literary beauty.
Have a wonderful week! Jealous!

FairyAnn · 16/10/2019 20:51

The Color Purple
The Collector
The Wasp Factory (not for the faint of heart)
The Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out Of The Window And Disappeared

Charley50 · 16/10/2019 20:52

Also voting for anything by Luanne Moriarty so funny, smart and so readable.

Or, I am pilgrim for a gripping thriller.

Inthemoment38 · 16/10/2019 20:52

The Secret History by Donna Tartt- all round brilliant writing and gripping story.

Liane Moriarty for light and absorbing.

VioletCharlotte · 16/10/2019 20:54

If you like crime/ police procedural books, try Michael Hambling's DCI Sophie Allen series. I'm on book 7 and really enjoyed them all.

Also LJ Ross DCI Ryan books are really good, especially the first one.

Just One Damned Thing After Another by Jodi Taylor

FromTheAllotment · 16/10/2019 20:57

The Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch. Basically “what would police work be like if there was magic” and they’re really well written page turners.

I agree with Eleanor Oliphaunt too.

The “Wool” trilogy if you like post-apocalyptic.

Lee Child books if you like an easy read action story.

FromTheAllotment · 16/10/2019 20:57

Oh yeah those Jodi Taylor books are good 👍

endofthelinefinally · 16/10/2019 20:58

The Pillars of the Earth. Ken Follett.

LemonGingerCakes · 16/10/2019 21:01

Robin hobb.

Start with the Farseer trilogy.

ChinookPilotsGoVertical · 16/10/2019 21:01

A Sense of Honor, James Webb.

LuJaAlJa · 16/10/2019 21:05

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

Milkstick · 16/10/2019 21:24

A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. And the other two in the Wayfarers trilogy - the second one is really good too, the third a little different in style but still good.

Depends on the genre you like, I'll give pretty much anything a go but ones that spring to mind are-
My book club books I've recently enjoyed:
Together by Julie Cohen
Everything I never told you by Celeste Ng

Books that have made me laugh-
The Rosie Project + Rosie Effect + Rosie Result by Graeme Simison
The Secret Diary Of Hendrik Groen 83 1/4 Years Old- by Hendrik Groen ( you should be able to find an English copy, I read it in Dutch,it's hilarious!)

I love science related books, so my most unputdownable book since I started reading it as a blog has got to be The Martian by Andy Weir. I realise it's not for everyone but this kept me up all night reading, his attention to detail was astounding. I was right there on Mars with the main character throughout the book.. Probably up there as one of my all time favourites.

Happy reading !
