I have just found out I will have quite a bit of time next week that I don't usually have and would love to spend some of it reading. Please recommend a book I can lose myself in!

I hated the Girl with all the Gifts.. found it really oppressive

TheLionAndTheRose · 18/10/2019 17:34

Rachel’s holiday and anybody out there by Marian Keyes. Have read both of these at least 4 times.

Trying81 · 18/10/2019 17:41

Dorothy Koomson’s books are all very good

Agree with everyone saying Liane Moriarty too

The Help is a delight. And it's nice and big so it lasts!

Agree on Eleanor Oliphant.

A Thousand Splendid Suns

The Testaments

Read 1Q84 and be transported to another world!

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 18/10/2019 18:07

Not read the full thread so someone else may well have said this, but I can’t put down Elton John’s autobiography this week. I’ve almost finished it and I’ve been at work all week- this is unheard of me these days with two small children. Highly recommend.

PrettyShiningPeople · 18/10/2019 18:20

Just thinking about stuff I’ve read recently....

Hearts invisible furies
Rebecca
The Girl in the Letter

Currently enjoying Educated by Tara Westover (another recommended on here, I think we’re all reading the same things Grin) Took me a while to get into it and almost gave up but glad I persevered.

misskatamari · 18/10/2019 18:21

Ready player one by Ernest Cline is fantastic. Recent books I've really enjoyed are Beartown (and is sequel Us against you), and the Mr Mercedes trilogy by Stephen King (they're crime ones as opposed to Horror and really great)

lolaflores · 18/10/2019 18:59

Tje Winter Soldier...I roared at the end. Just fell in love. Hook line sinker and it punched me right in the guts in the last 3 pages.

The Explorer by Katharine Rundell (children's)

Tobebythesea · 18/10/2019 19:56

This is going to hurt and Twas the nightshift before Christmas by Adam Kay

Funny and a quick reads. Not everyone will agree with these books though but I loved them.

Cassimin · 18/10/2019 20:03

My two favourites have already been mentioned
A thousand splendid suns
The storyteller.
Currently reading the goldfinch.

escapade1234 · 18/10/2019 20:07

Where the Crawdads Sing was my book of the summer. I adored it and often think about it.

Wiglio · 18/10/2019 20:21

Dark star safari, Paul Theroux (Louis’s father) a great travel writer, don’t get on so well with his novels though

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 18/10/2019 21:01

Another vote for The Secret History.

It's a a chunky book but it just flew by. It was so gripping.

isayhitocats · 18/10/2019 21:40

Wild swans

bohemia14 · 18/10/2019 21:56

I'm amazed that people have mentioned BA Paris. Behind Closed Doors was the worst book I've ever read! Just shows we are all different.

For page turners I agree with many that have been said -

Liane Moriarty - all her books except the most recent, Nine Perfect Strangers. I gave up half way through.

I am Pilgrim

The Mother in Law and The Family Next Door by Sally Hepworth

The Island by Victoria Hislop

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

FrownPrincess · 18/10/2019 22:23

The Bonesetter’s Daughter
Wild Swan

Greeper · 18/10/2019 22:27

My lovely wife. Samatha Downing. Superbly written domestic psychological thriller.

Milkstick · 18/10/2019 22:28

Oh yes @matildacat Circe was so good! Thanks for recommending another by the same author.

Milkstick · 18/10/2019 22:29

It's quite old now but The Other Hand by Chris Cleve was good. And The Sisters Brothers. And The Book Thief by Markus Zuzak.

Beamur · 18/10/2019 22:31

I did not like the Secret History. Only read it if you're in your 20's and don't have kids.
Circe is wonderful (as is Madeleine Miller's previous book) lustrous writing.

MatildaCat · 18/10/2019 22:32

@milkstick I think we've got similar taste! I also enjoyed The other hand and the book theif 😄
