I have just found out I will have quite a bit of time next week that I don't usually have and would love to spend some of it reading. Please recommend a book I can lose myself in!

The Spy and the Traitor by Ben McIntyre. Probably helps that I was a teenager in the 80s but an all round riveting read.

The Salt Path can’t remember who it’s by but a beautiful read, I devoured it In a few days. Cried in the first chapter, didn’t want it to end.

Divine secrets of the Yaya sisterhood

AutumnRose1 · 17/10/2019 00:02

tiredteddy it's by Raynor Winn. I loved it too. It's helped me to just put one foot in front of the other some days. I don't normally find inspiration in anything!

Burpsandrustles · 17/10/2019 00:04

Give with the wind... Stunning...

The Snare - can't remember the author, but they're Icelandic. Scandi noir story about drug smuggling. Really good.
Also The tattooist of Auschwitz. Definitely unputdownable.

The Murmur of Bees - by Sofia Segovia

Bloodybridget · 17/10/2019 02:39

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's three novels Purple Hibiscus, Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah are all brilliant; for unputdownability I'd especially recommend Americanah, which is quite long. Purple Hibiscus has some very distressing parts (about treatment of children).
Someone upthread mentioned Ken Follett, The Pillars of the Earth: I loved that too. Another great historic saga is London by Edward Rutherfurd.

Boy swallows universe by Trent Dalton.

The Charlie Parker novels by John Connolly. I'd loan you my copy of Every Dead Thing, but my ex wife bought it for me as a signed first edition. :o The Black Angel is my favourite in the series. Brightwell is a terrifying baddie.

ChipInTheSugar · 17/10/2019 14:09

"Whatever Happened to Betsy Blake", and "Mid-day" - both by David B Lyons. Fantastic twists and enjoyable story lines.

LittleSweet · 17/10/2019 16:27

Tales of the City series by Armistead Maupin. His autobiography is also wonderful. Funny, thought provoking and every time I read them I feel like the characters are my friends and I'm coming home. He sees the world in a unique way.
I also enjoyed the Cazalet series, except the last book. The last book is trying to cover too much time and the characters are one dimensional and unbelievable. The other books capture the era and the characters are real people that you want to know what happens to them. Just don't read the last book.
Jayne Eyre, just a wonderfully written story of a woman ahead of her time, a true fighter and accurate observer. I think she's autistic like me. The words are like poetry, just used in a magical way.

LittleSweet · 17/10/2019 17:00

Yes to Memoirs of a Geisha. Another writer who makes words , more...

LittleSweet · 17/10/2019 17:10

Call me by your name, by Andre Acimen.
I read it after seeing the film which is also brilliant, book sequel being released on the 29th and I can't wait.
