What Are Your Biggest Irrational Fears?

PennyNotSoWise · 16/10/2019 13:50

Mine is computers in Safe Mode Grin

I had a nasty browser locking, ransomware virus a while ago, and had to make a new admin account using Safe Mode to get rid of it. I tilted the laptop screen back so I could barely see, and typed what I needed to at arms length as if the computer was about to explode. I don't know why, I just fucking hate it, it looks wrong and scary. I had the worst panic attack when I'd finished, could barely breathe I was so scared Confused

I think if I ever saw binary code in real life, I'd drop dead on the spot Grin

Are you scared of anything for no apparent reason?

I’m scared of monkeys for literally no reason . And plasters . I was also scared of animated characters (Fiona from shrek , elsa from frozen etc) not cartoons just animation . Recently had to talk about it in counselling to get over it - I had the fear since the age of 5. I’m now 25! It’s taken 20 years for me to get over it . Still working on the monkeys and plasters lol

PuppyMonkey · 16/10/2019 13:57

I still suspect microwaves might be bad for me somehow.GrinConfused

PennyNotSoWise · 16/10/2019 13:58

Hey, monkeys can be violent little shits you know, so maybe you're wise to be scared of them Grin

Shock I bet you missed out on a lot of classics, being scared from such a young age? I'm glad you managed to get help for it :)

@pennynotsowise

Yep I still can’t tell the difference between Pocahontas and the characters in Aladdin! quite sad really! I never really thought anything of it until I was around nine or 10 and my friends were shocked that I have never been to a Disney store but at the time I had no interest because of my phobias. Stems back to childhood trauma of my dad tormenting me over Barbies I think LOL

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/10/2019 18:46

I'm scared of long roads in front of me. As in, I'm not scared of driving, or crashing, I actually like driving and I have never had an accident or anything. But if I see the long roads stretching ahead of me I get the most overwhelming sense of dread/fear. Not always.

I also get this as a passenger (less frequently) and when I am running. Especially if I see a hill in the distance and the road going up it..

I am also terrified of somehow ending up on the motorway so the blue signs on normal roads give me the same fear. A few weeks ask I was stuck at roadworks on an A road bridge over a motorway and I honestly thought I was going to have to get out of my car.

Steviestamborine · 16/10/2019 18:48

Puddles. Sometimes my mind tricks me for a second and I think it’s a huge hole I’ll fall down. It’s a real moment of terror.

Have you watched many horror films? The worst kind of shit always seems to happen on long stretches like that :/

Vast, open spaces. I'm scared that I'm really exposed to aliens and there's nowhere to hide and that I'll get abducted.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 16/10/2019 19:03

Yep I still can’t tell the difference between Pocahontas and the characters in Aladdin!
That may not be because of the phobia though, I’ve seen them all so many times with my two obsessed DDs and yet I still sat all the way through Mulan recently, waiting for Just Around the Riverbend to come on. So disappointing 🤷‍♀️. My big fear is gas - natural gas appliances that is not baked bean induced gas. I cannot light the pilot on either the boiler or the Aga for fear of something terrible happening, I book my yearly service on them for round about the time I want them on and let the engineer do it 😳

AliceLittle · 16/10/2019 19:35

Portaloos, always a fear that they'll topple over with the door down.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/10/2019 19:36

Penny nope, I don't watch any horror films. I actually think it's some kind of weird form of claustrophobia like i'm 'trapped' on the road.

mustangs · 16/10/2019 19:40

@PennyNotSoWise YES to computers in safe mode. It's like you're seeing inside it's hidden brain, all dark and unfriendly. I fucking hate it.

I also have a fear of underwater machinery (eg wave machines). And machinery that starts / operates automatically. Like it's been sitting there, quietly thinking

ChrissyHynde · 16/10/2019 19:43

Stepping on to an escalator to go down a floor , feel like I'm going to fall every time

nordstrom · 16/10/2019 19:44

Swings. I didn't think through this having children business...

MrsGrindah · 16/10/2019 19:47

Nipping to the loo in the middle of the night. I just know something is going to grab me from under the bed or from inside the wardrobe. If not, I’m going to get bitten by a shark in the toilet or see a burglars face at the window!

MrsGrindah · 16/10/2019 19:47

Oh God yes escalators

AnneTwackie · 16/10/2019 19:51

Komodo dragons. They know too much.

PennyNotSoWise · 16/10/2019 19:58

That's exactly it, you've explained it better than I could! It's so wrong and weird, I dunno. Ugh.

Every time my laptop hangs/freezes too, I get really panicky that those weird black error boxes will pop up with the white, weird computer speak in them. Grin ERR:2000200098840 werwtchinuhheee-hee 200858920 Just say what the problem is in English instead of all the secret code ya fucking weird, robotic twat!

Earwigs. Five year old me was told they get in and eat your brain ... by my horrible cousin who then held down and tried to shove one in my ear. Bastard.
I still fear them!

AmericanLemonade · 16/10/2019 20:07

Feathers, fucking bastard feathers. My mum is phobic if birds do I got that off her but it just developed into feathers too.

mustangs · 16/10/2019 20:35

@MrsGrindah I also have the under-the-bed fear, especially after watching that episode of Luther Confused

MrsGrindah · 16/10/2019 20:42

Exactly. They are out to get us.

SpecialKRocks223 · 16/10/2019 20:46

I get freaked out putting my head underwater with goggles on incase I see a shark in the swimming pool... I'm 35 years old.
