Red wine recommendations

Going away with 4 kids in the half term and decided to treat myself to some nice bottles of red wine. Normally prefer a cav sav or a pinot but will drink anything!
Any recommendations? Happy to go to £15a bottle

I had the most beautiful French Malbec last weekend
'Monastier'
I'm in Ireland and it was €9.00 here. I'm sure you'll find

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 15/10/2019 21:37

Yellow Tail Jammy Red Roo is a firm favourite amongst friends and family. £7 from Tesco but tastes much more expensive!

fraggleplop · 15/10/2019 21:45

I didn't like the Jammy red roo - I found it quite sweet. I was disappointed !
I like all varieties of Casillero del Diablo - particularly the Malbec.

LeGrandBleu · 15/10/2019 21:46

I like Italian Sangiovese

longtompot · 15/10/2019 22:21

I think its quite difficult to suggest a wine you'd like, esp as you don't really drink wine.

But....

Co Op has a really nice Italian Irresistable Montepulciano d'Abruzzo for £7. They also sell a malbec Trapiche from Argentina for £8.

Sainsburys have a really good Era Costana Crianza Rioja for £5.85 which tastes like its much more than that. One that is around £15 is a rioja, Campa Viejo gran reserva.

I would suggest you go to an actual wine shop not supermarket and see what they suggest. I've done that before. Said I had a budget up to £15 and what we liked, and was given a few suggestions.

longtompot · 15/10/2019 22:24

Forgot to say Yellow Tail has a really strange taste due to the Mega Purple grape concentrate they add to it to give it their flavour. I personally don't like it.

cheeseislife8 · 15/10/2019 22:26

It's all down to personal taste really.

I like Yellow Tail Shiraz, or most Australian Shiraz, as it's rich without being too sweet.

For something lighter a good Pinot Noir is nice. Personally I don't like wine too dry.

Crack on and experiment🍷

Tesco have a delicious Australian red called “19 Crimes”, which is usually £9, but currently £7.

Milliways · 15/10/2019 22:49

Laithwaites Black Stump or Cabalie are both lovely full bodied reds (always come in their best selling red selections).
Pillastro is also nice.

Span1elsRock · 15/10/2019 22:54

Barefoot Merlot. Nectar of the gods and only around £7 a bottle.

Love the stuff.

Woopdewoop · 15/10/2019 23:01

Treat yourself to a Chateauneuf de Pape (or chateauneuf de pe pe by the time you’ve done a bottle). Also good - Louis Jadot Beaujolais. Most Wanted Pinot Noir

BlackPatch · 15/10/2019 23:04

Macguigans is really good. Australian award winning vineyard does Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate ones are lovely and can be found on offer for under £10 In Sainsbury’s usually! Even the cheaper black label ones are very drinkable!

SilverySurfer · 15/10/2019 23:06

Chateauneuf du Pape is one of my favourites but it's not cheap.

Pieceofpurplesky · 15/10/2019 23:07

Nero D'Avola is the best red wine. There is a special offer in Morrisons at the moment for two for £10. I usually pay about £10 per bottle and this is up there with the more expensive ones

GenerationEx · 15/10/2019 23:09

Turkey Flat butchers block is the best Barossa red under £15, in my humble opinion (very experienced in that region!).

For French, I agree with posters above, you can’t go past a chateneauneuf du pape.

TheNinkiestNonk · 15/10/2019 23:10

A New Zealand Pinot noir. The Marlborough ones are nice.

Mac47 · 15/10/2019 23:19

I prefer European wine. If you are near a waitrose, they do a nice bardolino, which is v light. Had a lovely amarone (on offer) the other week. Faustino rioja is very nice. I find some french ones can be a bit sugary tasting. If am just grabbing one, will usually be a rioja or a chianti.

TheNestedIf · 16/10/2019 10:06

Ravenswood Lodi Zinfandel is nice.

Or anything by D'Arenburg. They can be pricey but they've got a couple of wines at around £15.

^This! The Rex Mundi is wonderful too.

Whoops75 · 16/10/2019 10:45

I like red wine and usually have expensive taste.
Was at a friends last week and she gave me a glass of Argentinian Malbec from a bag.
She got it in Aldi it contains two bottles and cost around €15.
It has a little tap on it and the foil bag keeps the wine fresh for 2 weeks+

Perfectly drinkable and very portable.
