Mushy peas

Can somebody please explain the appeal of mushy peas to me?
I was put off them when I had school meals back in the 70's. As far as I recall they are little green lumps of flour. Bleurgh.
I also dislike vinagered beetroot, fried onions, lumpy custard, blancmange and Swede in a salad because of school meals.

I love mushy peas

I love mushy peas. I bought some from Aldi recently and they turned my piss green.

justthecat · 15/10/2019 17:36

I love them! Sainsbury’s do individual frozen pots of them, taste great

@ AnneTwackie: Green piss from one of my favourite foods? Shut up and take my money!

avocuddl · 15/10/2019 17:41

Yum I love them! Hate tinned peas though, they taste awful imo

Gingaaarghpussy · 15/10/2019 17:51

Maybe I should try them. I mean we are talking something like 40 years since I tried them, so there's a possibility they may have changed.
But WHAT IS THE APPEAL? What's wrong with bog standard peas?

My friend calls them competition peas, because they make you fart

thistimelastweek · 15/10/2019 17:58

I'm not a picky eater, it's the word mushy that puts me off

Mehmehmeh19 · 15/10/2019 18:02

Swede in salad?🤔 this one must of escaped me I quite like the taste of raw swede. I'm going to try it

Shoobydoo123 · 15/10/2019 18:08

I’m with you - as a 70’s school child I was often last into the playground as I was made to eat mushy peas. Its the smell (still gets me) and that floury, suck all the moisture from your mouth taste. Banned in my house !

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 15/10/2019 18:09

They are a thing of beauty with battered cod & chip 😋

They are nicer than bog standard peas imo

Outsomnia · 15/10/2019 18:09

No, you are doing it wrong, they are marrowfat peas where I come from. They used to need soaking overnight with bread soda, but they can be bought now with "no soak". Just bring to the boil and simmer for a few minutes, then serve.

OMG they are the food of the gods, with butter and black pepper added, sorry OP, try a few varieties now. One of your X a day too!

Grumpbum123 · 15/10/2019 18:10

Butter vinegar and loads of white pepper, yum

iklboo · 15/10/2019 18:12

I eat them cold out of the can Blush

Gingaaarghpussy · 15/10/2019 18:12

@Mehmehmeh19. I don't think it was raw, because it was soft

OP posts:
inwood · 15/10/2019 18:14

Love them, have to be tinned or chip shop, loads of vinegar and salt.

Gingaaarghpussy · 15/10/2019 18:14

@Outsomnia. Are marrowfat peas and mushy peas not virtually the same thing?

OP posts:
Gingaaarghpussy · 15/10/2019 18:16

@Shoobydo123. My sentiments exactly. Our dinner lady was called Mrs roof and she used to hover over your shoulder like a vulture.

Outsomnia · 15/10/2019 18:21

@Gingaaarghpussy

I dunno, but those I use are in a packet from Aldi, not a tin. They are dried, and need to be brought to boil then simmered for a few minutes. Gorgeous!

I think the tinned/canned versions are not a patch on the dried marrowfats. But TBH I don't know if the tinned variety ARE actually marrowfats, but am guessing they might be! I never use the tinned variety anymore, but that's just me. Each to their own and all that!

Gingaaarghpussy · 15/10/2019 18:23

@iklboo. Ick!

PickAChew · 15/10/2019 18:43

They don't just make me fart, they make me shart.

I avoid them.

PickAChew · 15/10/2019 18:44

Dahl, OTOH, I'm fine with. I just don't get along with mushy peas.

TellySavalashairbrush · 15/10/2019 18:50

Harry Ramsden tins of mushy peas are lush. Mind you wind wise they are lethal the next day Blush

GeneHuntLover · 15/10/2019 18:56

Love mushy peas, Batchelors is my brand of choice. Cheap white bread liberally spread with proper butter, hot mushy peas next and then fish fingers mmmmmmmm

HalfBrick · 15/10/2019 18:56

Top tip - add a teaspoon of sugar to your tin of mushy peas, it takes the school dinner taste away and turns it into a borderline dessert Grin. Seriously though, try it!
