17 yr old DD has bloody nits!

FFS! I thought we’d seen the last of those bloodsucking little feckers a decade ago! Angry Am additionally annoyed because it’s due to her dad’s girlfriend not bothering to de-louse her kid before they all went on holiday together. Hmm

Do any of the shop-bought things work? When she was at primary, I used to comb through with conditioner and the nitty gritty comb every Sunday and that got rid, but it’s not doing the trick this time. Are they still resistant to everything on the market, or is there some miracle cure that’s come on the market in those blissfully louseless years?

Help me please! 🙏

Surely shes old enough to do the combing herself? It does work it just takes a while.

Mrsjayy · 15/10/2019 11:00

Just treat her how you used to treat her there is no new miracle cure sadly I would probably use a treatment first then nit comb for 2 weeks your poor DD.

Breathlessness · 15/10/2019 11:00

Hedrin smothers them so they can’t develop resistance

Headrin still works, bit I would personally hand her the comb and conditioner and tell her to crack on! Do an inspection after she has finished - mainly to make sure the little buggers are gone, for your sanity.

DS hated the nitty comb and opted for a grade 2 cut instead. It worked, but it's a bit of a drastic style for a teenage girl!

Mrsjayy · 15/10/2019 11:02

I caught them at 3o off the DDS I couldn't nit comb properly it's an arse ache and you really need someone helping you out.

Slappadabass · 15/10/2019 11:02

Her dad's gf is a grotty cow. Poor kids!
Conditioner and Comb always worked for me, my friend caught them off her DD and she was due to dye her hair (at home) so did it anyway, killed all the little buggers!

Breathlessness · 15/10/2019 11:06

Yes, as she’s 17, wouldn’t she like to dye her hair with something full of ammonia? Or get it bleached?

inwood · 15/10/2019 11:08

Conditioner and nitty gritty. Do it for her it's really hard to do it yourself especially if you have long hair. I wanted 5 hours of last Sunday doing dts and me because there's one bloody parent who seems unable to treat their kid 😡

Sethos · 15/10/2019 12:10

Thanks for replies.

Have done 3 weeks of nitty gritty + conditioner and it is not working. Believe me, I have done this before - most weekends of the primary school years were spent combing - either de-lousing or checking. She was a magnet for the feckers. Angry

She has really ‘thick’ hair; the actual hairs are very fine, but there are just so many many many of them. Hence the nitty gritty doesn’t always remove the eggs, and it takes hours to do her head. No way whatsoever that she can do it properly herself.

Sounds like Hedrin is the best bet then.

I used to use bug buster combs on my two I bought them on line you get 2 and they worked really well.

spiderlight · 15/10/2019 12:42

I bought some stuff called NitWits from Amazon when my 12-year-old came home with them and that did the trick (had to comb after applying it).

RubbingHimSourly · 15/10/2019 12:47

Nitrid is the best lice treatment. It's only about £5 a bottle........wilko sells it but it can also be bought online

hazeyjane · 15/10/2019 12:53

Hedrin mousse or gel is best. Suffocates them rather than being an insecticide (which they can build up a resistance to).

Do it twice with a week inbetween, and a comb through with conditioner inbetween treatments to comb out dead lice and eggs

Sethos · 15/10/2019 13:15

I’ve just looked at the Hedrin page, and there are several products (natch!).

Any particular one? The ‘Once’ is tempting because it’s quick...

Vodka or original listerine. I've tried the vodka myself and yes it did kill the fuckers.

Soak hair till it's literally dripping wet, wrap in clingfilm and leave for an hour. Wash, then use conditioner to wet comb hair. Alcohol poisons the adults and dissolves the glue on the eggs so they come out as well. Wet combing just makes it easy to get them all out.

And a dog flea comb is much better than a headline comb. They're more robust and go through thicker hair easier.

FromageRay · 15/10/2019 13:19

Even Hedrin Once took 2 treatments on my kids :(
I caught nits whilst teacher training, tried several different chemical treatments but the thing that got shot of them was a home hair dye!

Ohyesiam · 15/10/2019 13:22

We used to use coconut oil overnight as it stops them breathing. Then comb every 2,3 days for 10 days and do another coconut oil.

My family is Middle Eastern with vey thick fine hair.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 15/10/2019 13:24

The Hedrin Gel is absolutely the best one

pumpkinpie01 · 15/10/2019 13:28

I remember my daughter having a real problem with them when she was at primary school , I used Hedrin and nit comb . Then I sectioned her hair off and went through it bit by bit and picked anything else left out by hand it took 3 hours but it did the trick ! Hate the little feckers, your poor DD

Whattodoabout · 15/10/2019 13:38

Hedrin is the bees knees. I had nits last year, never thought that would happen to be again. Caught them off my DC, treated us all with hedrin and the fuckers never returned.

CrotchetyQuaver · 15/10/2019 13:47

Using the hairdryer killed them off for my teenage daughter, we were at our wits end trying to get rid of them in her long fine hair.

BowiesJumper · 15/10/2019 13:48

I used the hedrin shampoo when I caught them from my son and it worked well! I also have very long, thick hair.

ohcarriemathison · 15/10/2019 13:50

I think the overnight treatments seem to be the best.
Feel bad for you and your DD.
I hate boys so much and wish as a society we could deal with them better.
When I was at school we had a school nurse who would regularly check our hair. Anyone who had nits went home with a letter. Apparently this is discriminatory to the child with nits. Now we do nothing and the child with nits whose parent doesn't care goes left untreated. I think this system is worse.
I had to do a presentation on head lice many moons ago and apparently adult male humans don't get them due to change in hormones ! Another joy for us Females that we still get them.

Hedrin Once.

It suffocates them.

Absolutely saturate her hair, tie in a towel, leave half hour or so.

It takes ages to wash out but it does work.
