17 yr old DD has bloody nits!

FFS! I thought we’d seen the last of those bloodsucking little feckers a decade ago! Angry Am additionally annoyed because it’s due to her dad’s girlfriend not bothering to de-louse her kid before they all went on holiday together. Hmm

Do any of the shop-bought things work? When she was at primary, I used to comb through with conditioner and the nitty gritty comb every Sunday and that got rid, but it’s not doing the trick this time. Are they still resistant to everything on the market, or is there some miracle cure that’s come on the market in those blissfully louseless years?

Help me please! 🙏

Oh your poor DD.

I remember my mum using prioderm in my nit magnet days.
It was vile. Smelt so strong that it had to be used outdoors, it had our eyes streaming and us coughing and spluttering.
So glad things are gentler nowadays.

I'd say hair dye too. Smother the bastards with a nice box dye (full of ammonia), put a conditioning mask on and comb through to get rid of the remnants, then wash out.

For future reference, Nenuco spray works as a repellent (and smells like lemons, really beautiful smell.)
I use this stuff on my DD (thick, curly, bum length hair) and she has completely avoided the nit infestation so far.

Has she gone back to her dads' since contracting them? As if she has you might be onto a losing battle if she's constantly coming into contact with them.

Conkerer · 15/10/2019 15:09

Do you have any GHDs or other straighteners? Do that for a few days after the treatment just to be sure.

bigchris · 15/10/2019 15:16

If anyone wants any free not stuff I've got quite a bit leftover from when dd last had them, don't want to throw away but some of it it is unused or only half used so pm me as I know how expensive it can be

CampingItUp · 15/10/2019 15:22

The Hedrin silicone one that suffocated them.

You have to use it at the exact intervals it tells you. Smother the love lice, then re-treat and smother the hatched bits before they mature enough to lay more eggs.

Nittynoraridesagain · 15/10/2019 15:44

My DD (17) has placements in nurseries and KS1.
The staff have told her to use dry shampoo.
So far, one year later, she hasn't had them yet.
DD has long thick hair.
Also, lots of conditioner helps getting the buggers out.
I have spent hours over the years nit combing.Angry

Haworthia · 15/10/2019 15:49

Apparently the silicone based stuff is best because the nits have built up resistance to the pesticide type ones.

I’ve used Hedrin Once and Nitwits from Amazon (as previously mentioned) and they’re both good. But combing its really key. Really really thorough, relentless combing. Section off the hair and check every square inch of scalp. I start at one temple and work my way all around the head. It’s so tedious but you have to.

All these people saying your DD should do it herself must be mad. It REALLY helps if you can actually see what you’re doing, and examine the scalp.

ohcarriemathison · 15/10/2019 15:49

@bigchris I would really appreciate that if you didn't mind ?
I actually don't k so how to PM on my mobile ? Have been looking and can't find it, sure I've sent PM's before ??

FairyJuice · 15/10/2019 16:04

I remember Prioderm and the shame of knowing that everyone in school now knew you had nits cos the stuff smelt so bloody strong and had to be left on for ages. Much preferred it's successor Lyclear.

I second the hair dye or straighteners option.

YouSirOweMeOneNewHat · 15/10/2019 16:26

@FairyJuice Dreadful stuff wasn't it? Absolutely vile.

TheVanguardSix · 15/10/2019 16:31

Deleted my post. Confused
Hedrin Once!!!

Teacakeandalatte · 15/10/2019 16:42

I was going to say hair straighteners an advantage is you can see if you have done all the hair.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 15/10/2019 16:46

I remember prioderm!
We had a family wide infestation and one day we were all mid treatment and someone selling something knocked on the door.
Despite my mum having wet hair, a towel round her shoulders and a chemical smell strong enough to strip paint, the annoying man wouldn't stop his spiel until my mum said "Unless you want nits too you need to leave."
We've just come through the nitty gauntlet now. I think my children got them on holiday. I did multiple treatment with Full Marks as they were persistent little buggers. How did I guarantee they'd gone? I did a bulk order off the stuff from Amazon. Haven't needed it, natch.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 15/10/2019 17:05

I’ve been battling the buggers since last year (similar story to pp, someone isn’t treating their dc so the rest of us spend a fortune at regular intervals). I found hedrin, the once & the gel crap. Licin (I think) wasn’t much cop either. Full Marks seems to be working for us, it’s reasonably cheap & 1 bottle does 9 applications for us (4 short hair, 2mid length, 1 long). 1st application I got loads out of ‘Nitty Child’ max of 5 per head average out of all other dc, none out of me & dh, application 2 (7 days later) 3 out of NC, 1 or 2 out of 2 other dc, none out of the rest of us. Application 3 (again 7 days later, none at all. I use in conjunction with nitty gritty comb rather than useless ones in the box. Touch wood they’ve not returned yet & we’re back to twice weekly conditioner combing just to check.

TheBigFatMermaid · 15/10/2019 17:41

If you are only combing through once a week, you will never get to grips with the little fuckers! You have to do it at least every other day to break the cycle!

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 15/10/2019 17:44

Tell her to take up straightening her hair for a while, they sizzle well 😆

GreenTulips · 15/10/2019 17:46

Try Avon’s Sin so soft - it works

Goes in oily and washes out really well - they slip off

Then add tea tree oil a few drops daily to keep them off

Head lice are no respecters of persons.
You can buy stuff to kill and prevent in your local pharmacy, please don't make a drama out of it.
Wine to sooth :-).

Northernsoullover · 15/10/2019 18:07

I had nits on Sunday. I am 47. You tell me where the little fuckers came from because I'm blowed if I know. Anyway Hedrin once sorted it out.

pejorativelyspeaking · 15/10/2019 18:20

Straightened will fry them!

Elbowedout · 15/10/2019 19:54

Urgh that is so annoying. We had a hideous family infestation a couple of years ago and I eventually had success with Hedrin Once but it took several goes on me and my DD who both have long thick hair. The boys were all sorted out on the first attempt but DD and I struggled to get rid of them and then we got reinfested several times, I think from an untreated school mate. I started brushing a few drops of tea tree oil through our hair and we didn't get infested again so that might help. Of course it could just be that the other kid got treated, or maybe that mine stank so much that nobody came near enough for the little sods to transfer, but whatever the reason, we have been louse free since!

Witchend · 15/10/2019 20:17

apparently adult male humans don't get them due to change in hormones

Not true, dh caught them from the dc, and I didn't and when I was talking to some of the other parents we were surprised how common that was. We reckoned it was because the dads carried them about more piggyback and things.

gamerchick · 15/10/2019 23:04

apparently adult male humans don't get them due to change in hormones

Sorted. We'll just identify as male. The dickies will leave us alone then.

paige789 · 15/10/2019 23:08

I had a baby at 17 why the fuck are you combing her hair ?
