'New' phone issues with data/sending texts

Can anyone help? I'm not very technologically minded but this is annoying.

My husband gave me his old Samsung Galaxy S8 phone because it had a better camera than my current phone. This was when we were on honeymoon (we're long distance atm). My old phone was a cheap smartphone but I never had any issues with it. So he put my sim card into the 'new' phone. I was mostly using it to take photos on holiday and used wifi because roaming data is so expensive. Fine.

Anyway, since I've been home I'm having issues with data. It keeps randomly switching data off, today I never had any at all and have been using wifi in the supermarket at lunch time and at home. Usually I have a pretty good connection at work and can use data to get online with the old phone. But now this other phone is just not connecting or it'll be online for about 30 second then drop off again. It's really frustrating.

One of my friends texted me and I replied but it wouldn't deliver the message. So I had to Whatsapp her when I got home instead.

Does anyone have a way round this? Husband mentioned something about APN settings?

Thanks

I was going to say APN, which stands for access point names, before I got to the end of your post.

If you google access point names and the name of the network, you should find the correct settings to check.
