Why doesnt BBC iplayer have a fucking algorthym?!

Front page of iplayer is RuPaul's drag race, series 7 of something I've never watched, episode 1 of Simon Reeve's America's docu That I've alredy seen the first episode of and a box set of Waterloo Road.

I watch no soaps, avoid anything where women are pretending to be blow-up dolls, and based on my search history watch a lot of quizzes and documentaries. And yet RuPaul's "face" glares at me everytime.

Next row down is 'continue watching', as if I'm desperate to watch the credits of what I watched last night.

FFS BBC, they spent how much on this platform and are doing another version next year, I think. Yet this one is the most basic piece of shit I've ever come across. It's like a bookcase of VHSs that you have to watch the credits of the last episode of faulty towers to get to the next one because they can't skip the last 35secs.

All with a guaranteed budget year-on-year that is enforceable by a prison sentence. Whoever has designed this piece of shit or put so many limits on the capability of the team designing this shit should be in prison.

Thnks for reading... it's been a tough couple of weeks!

Ah, I find that latter point quite useful because I watch things that you don't need to see all the episodes of or will never find time to watch them all so I quite often want to only watch the most recent one. Examples are Masterchef, Gardeners World.

I agree that overly intuitive platforms are a bit spooky so it's quite nice that the BBC isn't.

Really the main problem is bloody Ru Paul. Fuck off my telly.

lljkk · 16/10/2019 19:25

It's rare that algorithms much understand me. So not spooky.

I guess I'm supposed to follow another model. I'm supposed to 'subscribe' to the programmes I want, leave the device on all the time, to download & delete after I have searched for my 'faves' and listened (offline?).

I could do that but it's a greater organisation burden then searching for what I want in the moment I want it.

And don’t get me started on Sounds, which replaced radio iPlayer - it is horrible to navigate around.

LizziesTwin · 18/10/2019 07:54

I don’t understand why Sounds doesn’t play the other episodes in the same show.

OUwhatnext · 18/10/2019 08:00

I agree. Whenever I go on the iplayer it's like it's the first time, no trace of anything I've watched before. The day after the Peaky Blinders finale I went on and it was nowhere to be seen, I had to use the search function to find it. (That sounds like a ridiculous first world problem, I know, but surely the finale was one of the most watched things on BBC that day, yet no sign of the show on the home page!)

I had never heard of the RuPaul thing, until strictly began with the woman who's apparently in it. Michelle something.
I think the adverts for the show have been ramped up.
I'm still not going to watch it though. Not my thing at all.

I agree, it’s crap. But Netflix is equally useless. It doesn’t prompt you to keep watching the series you’ve been watching every evening for weeks. You still have to dig around for it.

I also find the inability to click play on something in your download list and for it to keep playing the next thing in the list really annoying. This would be a brilliant feature for car journeys.

Mercedes519 · 18/10/2019 08:54

OMG yes. First time I used sounds I did auto play on a radio 4 history series and sleep timer and nodded off. Got woken up by a 6 music programme about reggae as it had decided that this was the most appropriate thing rather than the NEXT episode. IPlayer could do that, why not bloody Sounds?
