Mud, I really missed mud living in sandy places

MrsPlesWearsAFez · 13/10/2019 14:39

@SmudgeButt - Tim Horton's are having an incredibly slow expansion across the UK, so perhaps Timbits will reach you eventually Smile

I lived in China for a couple of years over 12 years ago, I missed hp sauce, marmite, beans and open Internet without a vpn! I remember crying with happiness when a friend sent me a can of heinz beans and I sat eating them cold out of the can, bean by bean with chopsticks Grin oh and British organised queues.

Cordial11 · 13/10/2019 14:46

Being able to eat at any time of the day (where I was the restaurants closed and it was difficult to eat out unless was a ‘meal time’), supermarkets not open all the time, fresh convenient food, small brown shrimps, smoked haddock, salt and vinegar walkers, pickled onion monster munch, salt and vinegar chipsticks, frazzles, British do the best crisps, convenient banking, cash back in supermarkets, general caring about other people eg queuing, the bbc, the nhs (yes we moan about them but they are AMAZING)

Expo · 13/10/2019 15:04

fruitinaheapisnotabirthdaycake · 13/10/2019 15:04

Expo · 13/10/2019 15:07

Oh and I forgot. The National Trust. Am never living abroad again. Done it

HoldMyLobster · 13/10/2019 16:49

I miss the National Trust. Also crappy sausages, pork pies, and... I think that's all.

When I'm back in the UK I do love a good browse around Boots.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 13/10/2019 16:58

London - I missed being surrounded by such history and diverse rich culture it never occurred to me that I would miss it the UK has such a rich culture

Sarcasm
Our awkwardness, being overly polite, uptight, not too friendly
Indian restaurants
Huge selection of crisps
Seasons - warm weather all the time doesn’t make everyone happy. When it says sunny here there is such a change in how people haven’t experienced that elsewhere

Ofitck · 13/10/2019 17:01

I miss dairy milk, proper Indian takeaways, crumpets, bacon and going to the theatre (am from near London).

Springfern · 13/10/2019 17:03

I lived in Vienna and I missed tea, pubs, bbc iplayer and Jay walking

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 13/10/2019 17:04

And milk
Never found milk to be as nice in the states or Australia

Fuma · 13/10/2019 17:07

The rhythm of the seasons
TEA!!!
Queuing - just feels weird not to do it but you never get anything done if you stand around and other people don't
Weirdly, British panel shows and quizzes, but these are quite cultural specific so maybe it's not weird
Understanding clothes sizing - I always have to stop and work it out even quickly, rather than just knowing
Conversations reminiscing about common childhood experiences

HoldMyLobster · 13/10/2019 17:28

Conversations reminiscing about common childhood experiences

Yes!

I also am very bad at pub quizzes here, even though I've lived in the US for 12+ years. I can't answer any questions about TV shows, sports, childhood heroes/TV shows, etc.

Fuma · 13/10/2019 17:53

Yy even after years, even if you learn the language and customs there are little things that you can't compensate for. Quizzes are a good example of highlighting this.

redchocolatebutton · 13/10/2019 17:56

tea and being able to buy (some) medicines in the supermarket.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 13/10/2019 17:57

Salty butter

Aridane · 13/10/2019 17:59

Bacon & plain sausages
Heinz Mayo, ketchup, beans & spaghetti hoops
Painkillers that cost 26p a packet in a supermarket
Fibre optic broadband
People understanding me / being able to understand them. (Completely my fault!)
Cadbury chocolate
Ready meals
Garlic bread
Large coffees

madeyemoodysmum · 13/10/2019 18:30

Humour irony

Beautiful old villages and cottages
Tea shops with proper scones and clotted cream

SmudgeButt · 13/10/2019 18:50

@MrsPlesWearsAFez

yes - still far too far away for me so I have to wait for when I return from LP in Toronto where there's a Tim's beyond security. (& a Swiss Chalet outside of security ...nice to have great rotisserie chicken) I usually buy a box full. And a couple of dipped chocolate sour creams....

redexpat · 13/10/2019 21:11

The sound and sight of cricket in the summer.

Expo · 13/10/2019 21:41

The biggest thing is the general feeling of society - people respecting others, queuing and not dropping litter. Obviously that is not everywhere in the UK but generally it is. People are just nice to each other. Honestly that was the thing that drove me to distraction when I lived abroad. People just didn’t give a shit about other around them.
