I missed (and still do) the countryside, sheep & cows to the right or left of the motorway, mango chutney, Branston pickle and pickled onions.

CarWreck · 13/10/2019 13:19

In west coast USA:

Back bacon
Normal bread that isn't ridiculously sweet or sourdough
Cider
Tea (Tazo 'Awake' is ok though)
Normal sausages
Meat pies
Smoked haddock, weirdly
Ribena
Crackers (that you pull) at Christmas, big Easter eggs at Easter
People understanding the English language as she is spoke Grin

CarWreck · 13/10/2019 13:19

Yes the lack of greenery too

redexpat · 13/10/2019 13:19

Walkers salt and vinegar crisps.
Indian restaurants.
Pizza express.
Cash machines that allow you to do EVERYTHING.
Awareness of the patriarchy.
Comics and panel shows that are actually funny.

I lived in the SF Bay Area and I missed the rain! Not always, but by the end of September I was ready for a grey rainy day. A two-week visit back to the UK in December, during which I saw the sun approximately never, was the cure.

The Last of the Summer Wine used to make me really homesick for Yorkshire stone houses.

redexpat · 13/10/2019 13:21

Oh yy to pies! I have to wait for british week in lidl because I cant be bothered to make them myself.

Belindabelle · 13/10/2019 13:22

The seasons and different weather. Really missed crisp Autumn days and cold dark Winter nights. Humid hot weather day in day out gets really boring after a while.

ThatLibraryMiss · 13/10/2019 13:24

CarWreck, yes! The bread! We bought a bread machine just to get normal sandwich bread.

The greenery too. I remember flying into Manchester, looking out of the plane window and marvelling at the billowing lush greenness.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 13/10/2019 13:24

'British' Indian takeaways
Bacon
British crisp flavours, like salt and vinegar
Proper cream, not squirty cream
English language bookshops and libraries, especially for children.

Now I'm back in the UK, I do miss some of the food items we got regularly living in the other countries. Plus decent cycle paths.

missyB1 · 13/10/2019 13:24

When we lived in New Zealand I missed

•Going to shows / gigs/ theatre (quite tricky there).
•Spicy food and fresh herbs / spices to cook with. Kiwis don’t do spicy.
•Public transport, in particular trains.
•The wide variety of food in British supermarkets.
• Prosecco!!!! And decent champagne.

Cordial11 · 13/10/2019 13:25

I am lucky to have found an irish butchers with real bacon, pork sausages and great pies/sausage rolls yum!

Oh UK sense of humour to! We really are funniest Grin

missyB1 · 13/10/2019 13:26

Oh gosh I forgot
• kids clothes and shoe shops! It was impossible to buy any decent kids shoes.

CarWreck · 13/10/2019 13:26

Actually lots of tech things like
Cheap broadband not linked to TV ownership, landline etc
PAYG mobiles where you don't have to PAY $0.05 to receive a text
Internet banking, easily transferring money to another account without being charged for a 'wire transfer' or suggesting you print out a cheque...
Decent annual leave/maternity leave

This was a few years ago but bloody hell, the UK/ Europe is so far ahead in these things...
Plus don't get me started on the palaver if you need any medical help.

HorseGallopingOnATomato · 13/10/2019 13:27

Living in various European and Asian countries, the one thing I always missed was British comedy! There really is nothing like it.

CarWreck · 13/10/2019 13:27

CarWreck, yes! The bread! We bought a bread machine just to get normal sandwich bread.

@ThatLibraryMiss
haha, same here! We were in SF Bay Area too.
I didn't have kids there but my friend also commented on the lack of kids' shoes - they're all 'sneakers' there.

stopwining · 13/10/2019 13:28

I missed Indian takeaways

They just weren't the same in Aus

Robinson's cordial
Fish and chips
Good television
Sarcasm

Earslaps · 13/10/2019 13:29

In Oz I missed salt and vinegar crisps, Cadbury's chocolate, decent cheese and a proper curry. Plus the British sense of humour, British TV, non-mainstream cinema and proper radiators.

ShanghaiDiva · 13/10/2019 13:30

I am in China and miss the following:
decent supermarkets where nobody has been 'fondling' the meat
bacon
Sunday times
people who understand my rather dark sense of humour
indian restaurants
shoes in wide fitting - nope, a size larger will not work!
bookshops
not having to take my passport with me for every bloody task - eg vaccinations, bank, overnight in hotel...
being able to conduct a financial transaction on my own - eg applying for a new credit card - completely impossible for me without someone to translate/interpret
rhubarb - never seen it here
the very British way of not being direct. I have decided to embrace the grey - my Chinese hairdresser declared that my hair would look very bad for a year. I feel a British hairdresser would have had been kind enough to have lied to me!

Fiacla · 13/10/2019 13:31

@CarWreck, yes, when I lived in the US, I couldn’t get over how weirdly primitive banking was, and what a faff the most ordinary transactions were — it really didn’t sit with my idea of the US as being technologically forward-thinking. Again, this was a few years ago, too, so I assume things have improved.

Cordial11 · 13/10/2019 13:31

@stopwining yes I’m aus! I havn’t found ‘english’ indian or chinese takeaway! All awful!

We have a box that gives us sky tv thank god so I get all the UK tv Grin

People never get my sarcasm I’ve had to tone it down. People look at DP like he is mad sometimes with his dad jokes!

OP posts:
Cordial11 · 13/10/2019 13:32

@Earslaps winter without radiators is so hard isn’t it! We struggle!

OP posts:
Fiacla · 13/10/2019 13:33

I’m actually about to leave the UK, and what I will miss will be proximity to London for theatre, music and art, and the network of public rights of way across the countryside.

Cordial11 · 13/10/2019 13:33

@ShanghaiDiva oh I think it sounds like I would struggle in China... the language barrier alone Shock

OP posts:
ShanghaiDiva · 13/10/2019 13:35

there's more:
cosmetic products that do not whiten/bleach my skin
fish and chips
queues
being a medium rather than an XXL

ShanghaiDiva · 13/10/2019 13:38

@Cordial11 - I will probably need some cultural training before I return to the UK to stop me shoving to the front of the queue and slamming the door in people's faces!
