What is with my DH’s poor sense of smell and taste?

I’ve name changed as this is a conversation I’ve had with a few people over the years. I’ve joked that if he dies before me I want them to see if there is a piece of Lego up his nose causing all the problems.

As far as he knows he has always been like it. He can smell things and sometimes quite strongly yet others hardly at all. He can smell garlic and B.O and will say how awful it is where as it won’t be quite as sickening for me or others. He says that all flowers and perfumes smell the same and that they don’t have any differences. Sometimes he might have done a really stinking poo that will make me heave and he won’t blink. Other times he will apologise because it’s stinky and he can smell that it’s bad. I find fuel at petrol stations really strong and makes me feel ill where as he will say he can barely smell it.

When it comes to food it is similar. He can pick out certain flavours as being strong but can’t pick out subtle flavours. He loves cheese and meat and anything salty. He often says that a combined meal just tastes the same no matter what is in it and can’t pick out individual parts. It means food for him is all about the texture. He can eat a lot of one thing, say macaroni cheese and enjoy it because it feels nice.

I feel sad that he misses out on good food. I feel sad that his diet is limited in some ways because it’s about texture and often very particular too.

I keep thinking that somebody somewhere would love to investigate him and find out what’s going on, in the hope that it might be an something simple. I suppose a part of me worries that something is wrong and it’s serious even though he’s always been like this. He says there’s no point going to a doctor because it’s not important and I agree but I’m still curious.

Anybody know of anyone similar to him?

I'm not exactly the same as your DH but I don't have a very good sense of smell or taste. I like strong tasting things and I like my food to have differing textures. I don't consider there's something "wrong" with me, it's just the way I am.

I sound a lot like your DH, I can smell some things but not others. To me, brie style cheese hardly smells at all but colleagues and DP can smell it a mile off even when they don't know it is there.

I'm not sure about taste. I can taste artificial sweeteners and find them all disgusting. I'm quite happy with own brand food and don't insist that it has to be Heinz, coke etc
