Would it be horribly outing to ask for a picture of your lounge?

I’ve recently moved and mine is just not looking right. My 8 year old summed it up saying it’s just not ‘homely’ enough- whereas the furniture really suited my previous house.

I can summon some cash to throw at it, but not huge amounts, and I have the added bonus of not being able to paint/wallpaper as it’s rented. I’ve tried looking in Instagram and Pinterest, and all the magazines (living etc.) but I would love to see REAL homes, not show homes. So if you please wouldn’t mind, any chance of a picture?

You can always use the 3M strips to gang artwork. Don't leave any marks on the walls and very easy to change up Smile

LouH1981 · 13/10/2019 18:53

@ClientListQueen oooh I really love the picture you have of the horse! 😍

NewName73 · 13/10/2019 18:58

What are the stickers pn your dining chairs for?

NewName73 · 13/10/2019 19:07

You need books, lamps, maybe some candles, plants and fresh flowers.

TheGirlWhoLived · 13/10/2019 19:12

The stickers have little flags on them left over from a Eurovision party Grin it’s all very good food for thought, and I’m enjoying all the other lounges! @Hanywany your room has so much character, I agree mine looks like a waiting room/community centre/hostel. I draw the line at it looking like a prison though Grin Also it is definitely very ‘Argos’ which I am looking to get away from. I don’t really know how to shop for a ‘vintage focal point’. Love the room with a large grey rug, I have bookmarked a couple on t’internet to visualise in the gap.

I quite like the layout, it suits us with draughts and things, and it’s a bit spooky out the front at night so I like having my back to it Blush I don’t think I’ll go for another corner sofa next time, it’s actually light grey, but I quite fancy a three seater with little feet and a matching big comfy armchair I’ll put that on next years plan of action!

The kids are still quite little (5 and 8) so they have all their crap in the playroom, and they have bean bags which get carted round the house at will.

I can’t get rid of the ceiling light, but I can just stop turning it on! What do I search for in order to find thick, sumptuous curtains? And as @IncrediblySadToo said, will it just block all the heat from the radiators?

I would put a big mirror above the mantel piece and then three themed pictures on the opposite wall. Definitely change the curtains to be longer, thicker and a colour that matches a new, bigger rug and some cushions. You could change the light fitting to a mini chandelier to give the room a bit more character but it may not be to your taste. You don’t need to do much. It is a nice room in general.

winniestone37 · 13/10/2019 19:25

Coving!!!!!!!

kateandme · 13/10/2019 19:27

we just got some lovely thick rusty yellows and mustard yellow check, grey curtains(long enough for our front door!) they came in two types and for 10 uid more you get the liner which make all the difference to the feel.

MummyMayo1988 · 13/10/2019 19:30

I must say OP I'm totally jealous of how tidy your living room is - I'd post a pic of mine but being the weekend, with 3 children home from school; it's a total mess atm 😬

I think your living room just lacks colour and a personal touch.
Photos on the wall?
Maybe art?
Colourful cushions for the sofa.
Perhaps a new rug to match the curtains your going to get?
A coloured lamp?

You have a blank canvas there so you can pretty much do what ever you like.

Have a little look on Wayfair.com - they are fantastic for homeware and are really very reasonably priced.

GaaaaarlicBread · 13/10/2019 19:33

Depends on what colours you like. You’ve got a good sized room there so maybe a feature wall, a mirror, a big rug in the middle and some new cabinets in the centre . Even some plants or something from ikea on a shelf ? Our living rooms is small but it is cosy (we feel!), so you have a lot more space to work with than we did but I thought I’d share anyway seeing as you asked x

Take down your artwork. It's too much of a mishmash and all hung at different levels. I would replace it with big framed prints or canvases. You could go for either sepia, B&W or colourful, but not two of them or all three.

Get a big piece of framed art or a mirror and hang it over the fireplace, vertically, with the bottom of the frame quite close to the top of the fireplace (i.e. no more then 9 inches from fireplace to bottom of picture or mirror). This needs to be a real statement piece if art. A mirror would be best though, as it would make the space appear wider.

Where are all the tall units gone from your previous home? You need them back. Put books in them, or colourful knick knacks. Or both. They could go on the window wall and the fireplace wall. If the units went with the house, consider getting some of your own to put in the room.

Get a rug in a warm colour and maybe an oval shape to break up the rectangularity- red/orange, green/purple.

You need lamps instead of the ceiling light. Consider lampshades in colours other than cream/white.

Get colourful curtains that are longer than the ones currently in place (colour could match one in the new rug). Couch cushions in same or complementary shades.

Big plants in big baskets or structured pots - by the window (get little stands on casters so you won't destroy the floor underneath with moisture).

If you're able to move the couch in front of the window with the chaise longue part close to the fireplace I would do that, and move the TV to the wall facing the fireplace on the dining room end of the room, with plants and/or another tall unit to the left, then put tall units where the TV is now.

@LouH1981 thank you :) it's a canvas made from a photo I had done by a photographer

Elyat · 13/10/2019 20:01

It's the layout. We recently switched our huge corner sofa for a 3 seater and an armchair. Initially we had the new sofa against one wall with the armchair at a slight angle against the same wall, with the tv opposite. Similarly to yours this meant we created kind of corridor effect. Felt like a waiting room, not cosy at all. If people visited we were all facing the same way. One evening I spent ages dragging furniture around until we found a much better layout and the room is like a completely different space despite the furniture being the same. At the moment yours is a bit like a waiting area in a takeaway with that layout Grin

Plants also helped and it's easy enough to pick some up - I bought a lovely peace lily from asda the other day for £2.50.

joffreyscoffees · 13/10/2019 20:10

I don't mind showing you mine (I have name changed) because I've just taken a picture of it!

Your curtains are too short, longer, maybe to the ground would be nice. Bigger rug maybe in a warm colour, large mirror or picture on wall xx

NationMcKinley · 13/10/2019 20:14

@Cocolapew I love your living room. Also love the William Morris wallpaper in another poster’s living room. When we finally do our bedroom up I’m putting in a bid for WM curtains (DH not keen, the twat)

Zoejj77 · 13/10/2019 20:28

Too much brown with magnolia walls looks very dated. You can def sort this out

wooo69 · 13/10/2019 20:31

Still a work in progress, we have been here 12 years and lived with the furniture from our old house and builders magnolia and white until now. The suite is the wrong one but we have to keep it until the store gets the one we actually ordered

@Langpants Your rooms are gorgeous. Do you mind me asking whether the plants are real or artificial and what they are? I want to add greenery to my house but don’t know where to start

DogAndCatPerson · 13/10/2019 20:40

You need lamps and less brown
