Would it be horribly outing to ask for a picture of your lounge?

I’ve recently moved and mine is just not looking right. My 8 year old summed it up saying it’s just not ‘homely’ enough- whereas the furniture really suited my previous house.

I can summon some cash to throw at it, but not huge amounts, and I have the added bonus of not being able to paint/wallpaper as it’s rented. I’ve tried looking in Instagram and Pinterest, and all the magazines (living etc.) but I would love to see REAL homes, not show homes. So if you please wouldn’t mind, any chance of a picture?

Plants. I have no style at all, my place looks like 2 teenagers went to Ikea while high and bought me my furniture. But about a year ago I got loads of plants. Now people say 'oh it's so homey in here, love the plants'

MerryMarigold · 13/10/2019 18:04

I'd get a corner cabinet off eBay and dump one of the IKEA ones. Everything is too much the same height which is adding to the blandness. Fill in the gaps with plant stands. Also a coffee table in the middle and v yes, a rug with brighter colours in curvy patterns.

Will post a pic of my lounge in a min but first of all can you change the layout of your corner sofa? The long bit would look better on the right rather than the left in my opinion?
Agree re plants and lamps. Blankets and candles are my go to!

Mine - it was too blue and yellow for me so we bought the picture a few weeks ago from homesense and I love it.

@Langpants
I love that room! ❤️

TheOriginalNutty · 13/10/2019 18:13

You sound a bit like me and when I did my living room last year I decided to reuse as much stuff as I could and buy second hand.

I painted the pine sideboard and cupboard grey, got a little side table for a fiver from shpock and my two 2 seater sofas and chair were £80, again from shpock.

The thing I get asked about the most is the bookcase which is actually a £10 garden shelving unit from Ikea and I sprayed it copper Smile

I absolutely adore the room because it’s not matchy matchy and so if I see something I like for there then it doesn’t necessarily need to go, hence the random wall art.

I need a better blind and some curtains but other than that I just add and take away bits whenever I feel like it.

Stop using overhead l8ght and get 3 or 4 lamps with soft bulbs can buy in Wilkinson at £5 or less the main problem is the dreadful light.Add cheerful cushions and soft throws .

TheOriginalNutty · 13/10/2019 18:14

Apologies for the shit pics, my camera is broken.

TheOriginalNutty · 13/10/2019 18:16

@Langpants that room is fabulous

L0bstersLass · 13/10/2019 18:17

I'd get the ceiling re-plastered to hide the artex. A single light with a shade from the ceiling and then some lamps in the room for occasional lights.
The curtains need to be a bit longer so there is no gap between the bottom of them and the bottom of the window.
I'd also get a larger colourful rug, and some paintings on the wall.

This is mine

Lose the ceiling light and get some lamps, they never look good and yours just draws attention to the artex.

Also, get long curtains. Short ones are horrid.

Lose the rug.

Everything is very straight and boxy. As others have said, get some plants. A big palm would make a huge difference, plus some succulents on a picture shelf with your other pictures on it would be a mile better.

It's very monochrome with lots of neutral colours. There's a few things you can do, depending on your budget:

  • Choose a bright contrasting colour to add interest and select accessories in that, things like cushions, pictures, etc.
  • All I can see is a big expanse of plain wall. This needs something on it - have a look in The Range or B&Q for some cheap prints you can hang but try to get them in colours that go with your selected contrasting colour.
  • Add cushions in this colour. Also add some mood lighting and make sure the lampshades match the colour of the cushions or blend with it.
  • Can you change the curtains for something more dramatic in the contrast colour? If not hang a swath of fabric across the top of the pole or add fairy lights to them.
  • Don't be afraid to play around …. if something doesn't work in one place (ie: lights around the window) try them elsewhere.

RADIATORS

Seriously, don’t any if you care about not covering up the radiators with long curtains??

XingMing · 13/10/2019 18:37

Textures give depth to a scheme, too, but agree with lamps, curves and pictures.

ChippingIn · 13/10/2019 18:37

BOF nice to see your dolls house, it looks lovely. I wish my house looked like that!!

IncrediblySadToo · 13/10/2019 18:41

@stopwining - do you happen to know what white paint was used in yours?!

@HavelockVetinari - I’d you get fed up of the blue ornament on the floor, please send it my way 😊

Holyshitbags · 13/10/2019 18:43

A big picture on the wall and long curtains - then a couple of cushions with accent colours from curtains on the sofa. Deffo after with pp about lamps - maybe a floor lamp over sofa or small lamp in corner or something x

manicmij · 13/10/2019 18:44

A bit bland. Floor length curtains with a bit colour in them, cushions to tone with curtains but not too many to clutter up . If you can't/not allowed to hang stuff on walls, how about a tall plant to break up walls. That Swedish co does fairly cheap ones. Table lamps with warm coloured shade but toning with curtains. It's really not that bad, just needs a bit tweeking, start with the curtains and work from there. Strangely I always had comments on how homely my sitting room looked when I had dark dusky pink curtains. Take your time, you'll get there.

tabby007 · 13/10/2019 18:44

I would suggest using a bright colour you like for pictures, a wall or rugs to brighten it up.
The sofas look black or dark brown?
How about a royal blue or bright blue or orange, grey or red? Best to choose one and have as feature wall on front wall only then I would say get different lights and a colourful rug and pictures back wall.

Here are some ideas I found online ...

Would the kallax unit window end fit 2 wide 4 high alongside the window (so rotated 90 horizontally and vertically) creating a space between the storage space and fireplace to fit in a colourful bean bag that would add colour, texture and a child's comfy space to the lounge.

stopwining · 13/10/2019 18:45

@IncrediblySadToo unfortunately not as we rent!

Do you mind me asking why?
I can ask the landlord they live nearby

Hanywany · 13/10/2019 18:48

BitOfFun love your living room, love the william morris wallpaper and dolls house
