Would it be horribly outing to ask for a picture of your lounge?

I’ve recently moved and mine is just not looking right. My 8 year old summed it up saying it’s just not ‘homely’ enough- whereas the furniture really suited my previous house.

I can summon some cash to throw at it, but not huge amounts, and I have the added bonus of not being able to paint/wallpaper as it’s rented. I’ve tried looking in Instagram and Pinterest, and all the magazines (living etc.) but I would love to see REAL homes, not show homes. So if you please wouldn’t mind, any chance of a picture?

Ok. This is what the living room of our house looks like:

I love all these living room pics here’s mine. I think lighting is key to adding warmth. I love dark colours as I think it makes a room feel cosy

It is bland with no colour. I understand you may bot be able to paint walls but you could get a large print for wall, I like seascapes, buy nice long curtains too floor in a nice texture with maybe rope tie backs, get some fluffy scatter cushions and a couple of plain scatter cushions to match too and a few really large feature plants in nice containers would make a difference and take the hard edge off the room. I'd go with turquoise accent.

feck!
This is what it looks like when I don't send the thumbnail not the actual picture...

I have a very old 1800s house and have mixed modern with period around the house. Colour, for me, is very important. My husbabd and I love orange . So we have a huge pop of orange in lounge, thrown in with greens and mustards/yellows. Cushions and light shade...and other decorative bits from Habitat. Habitat is a win... Its a small lounge but very high crlungs which creates a feeling if space. It's very cosy too! Colour, colour, colour is the way to go. But keep walls neutral. Get some longer curtains and maybe a blind (various styles out there). Pictures on the wall (we have 4 Lowry prints). Shelving too creates a homely feel. We bought the shelves from Amazon (£200 for all - paid £60 to have them fitted). That includes the mantle shelf - although we no longer have a fire place (dated and a waste of space). Wooden floors too create a feeling of space! You can always throw a rug down if you like. And a pile of throws in a corner...maybe also some tall grasses on a vase. A floor lamp...Just try things and see what works. If your child plays The Sims - you can create on there and see what works. Good luck! Green swiggles were fun Grin

Oh and plants and a big mirror! Wink

Stripyhoglets1 · 13/10/2019 21:22

Can you move the book case from the dining area into the living room and use the cubed storage in the dining area. Put the bookcase where the tv currently is. And get something like that oak tv stand you linked to and place at an angle into the room in the space where the storage units currently are between fire and window. Get a blind for the window for functionality and then long curtains to hang open decoratively. Add colour with curtains cushions and a new rug. Add a mirror above the fire place and make the artwork above the sofa hang symetrically. Get some cheap fluffy blankets for kids to curl up in. Then it will be homely.

@Abstractedobstructed

I love the rug in your kids game room!! Please tell me where u got it from, ive been after something bright and cheerful for aaages

livingrooooom · 13/10/2019 21:34

I agree with what others are saying about how neutral it is. And a big rug would look great!

Will attach a couple of pics of mine.

You could try walk stickers. Don’t cause any damage, you change them often

@Cotswoldmama @livingrooooom
Love your living rooms!

dancingmonkey · 13/10/2019 21:51

This is mine.
Op I think definitely the layout is too linear. Mix it up, separate furniture with maybe plants between.
My living room was done on a budget, lots of charity shop finds, I ‘made’ the palm tree draws, upcycled a cheaper charity find. And painted own artwork with old pots of paint!

Get creative! And you’ll b surprised what you can do.

Feeling where did you get your ottoman?

BettyG66 · 13/10/2019 22:45

I haven't read all the posts so it may already have been suggested - if possible I would get rid of the 'pelmet' that runs over the top of the opening to the kitchen. Long curtains would be lovely but you'll lose all the heat from the radiator if it is covered by curtains so just below the sill would be better.

Tmarsh123 · 13/10/2019 23:24

Floor length curtains....big rug...with matching mustard colour cushions...mirror above fireplace and phots on wall

QueenArseClangers · 14/10/2019 00:17

Books, lamps and greenery!

LadyB49 · 14/10/2019 00:55

Is pu t a really tall plant on the unit in the corner near the curtains. As tall as you can get in B & Q for about £20. Break up that whole corner. And more plants to break up the straight lines. Yes to long curtains, they can puddle o n the floor. Bigger mat.

kateandme · 14/10/2019 01:46

this thread is like escape to the country on heat! but i think mn need to take it down now as im getting serious lounge envy Grin

threatmatrix · 14/10/2019 08:19

You just need to bring a bit of opulence and colour to it. If money is tight go to the range get a beautiful mirror, homesense is fantastic for cushions and Dunelm for curtains. Google lounge ideas and look at images to see what You might like.

Try looking on Houzz - get all my inspiration from there! And it’s a great community, you can post ‘design dilemmas’ and people comment on what you should do, including interior designers etc. I’m hooked! www.houzz.co.uk

@stopwining Hi. Thanks but don’t bother your landlord over it. I’m just struggling to find a really nice white paint, and wondering if the £160 quid it’s going to cost to try the Little Green Paint was worth it.
