She’s been asking for about 6 weeks now. She has researched and watched videos etc.

I’m not sure what to say or do. I feel a bit of hypocrite as her dad has around 20 piercings. Iv also said I don’t mind piercings as she can take them out.

I’m guessing she’s way too young?

Why in the name of God would you get randoms on the Internet to advise your dd rather than telling her yourself? She’s 12 Confused
She shouldn’t be on bloody Mumsnet any more than she should be getting piercings that no reputable place are prepared to do for under 16’s anyway.

Watched dr pimple popper on quest this week with someone who developed lumps of Keloid scars on both ears after cartilage piercings the size of grapes

I'd say no at 12 non lobe ones can be tricky to heal, mine never did!
She'd have to take it out for school i imagine so that's not going to work.

I speak as someone with a lot of holes in her ears !

I say no when your 18 you can do whatyou want but not at the mo.

Don't "get her to read here". She is 12. You are in charge. Aren't you ?

Absolutely.
You don’t need to ‘prove’ anything or make a point of what strangers online have said. She’s 12 years old and you’re her mother...what you say goes regardless of what mumsnet says.
Goodness me.

IncrediblySadToo · 12/10/2019 19:22
  1. You have to be joking. She’s not old enough to be putting loads of holes in her body that she’ll have for life - plus it just looks awful on KIDS

It's too young OP, and I say that as someone who was a 12 year old with a helix piercing (I'm now in my thirties).

I badgered my mum to have it done and my mum, knowing nothing about piercings, took me to Claires who pierced my helix with a gun. It never healed fully, my hair used to catch on it and aggravate it all the time, it was always crusty and because I was too young, I didn't know how to look after it properly. It is a whole different ball game to looking after a lobe piercing. After a year or so, I gave up and took it out. Fortunately it healed fine and you can't tell I ever had a piercing there now.

What do you want to say to her? You don’t seem sure.

FWIW I let dd get her tragus pierced for her 13th. I really can’t get to wound up about ear piercings. I’ve said no to expanders, though dad says she doesn’t want those, as they really cause permanent damage to lobes, and to a nose piercing as school won’t allow it. Also no to navel piercing as my experience is that they always get infected.

Make your decision based upon:
How much you value your dd’s right to bodily autonomy at her age
Her own understanding of the risks and benefits of the piercing
How responsible your dd is in terms of caring for any piercing
School rules that need to be maintained
Risks of permanent harm/changes to her body

You sound like a proper wet lettuce, op

What will happen if you say no to this ridiculous idea ?

EstebanTheMagnificent · 12/10/2019 20:02

Agree with pp that 12 is far too young. There are lots of nice ear cuffs and magnetic studs which can be worn in the cartilage.

Inforthelonghaul · 12/10/2019 20:12

Our local secondary will allow one item of jewellery so a pair of earrings, nose stud or a stud in cartilage. They are way funnier about hair colour than piercings.

Personally I’d let her do it at 13 as long as it’s done at a piercing studio not with a gun. So many bigger things to worry about with teens, pick your battles and be glad if this is the worst you have to deal with. I don’t know why you’d start a big battle of wills over such a minor thing it’s hardly a tattoo on her forehead.

I had my helix done last week ... I have 20+ tattoos, tongue and nose pierced and that was easily the most painful! A week later and I still can't sleep on that side. At 12 I'd say no, but if you do let her have it done be aware it takes a long time to heal and not to pierce with a gun! It shatters the cartilage ... Need it doing with a needle.
