Does anybody know what these are?

I have found these in my mum's things. They look quite old and are in a little box. Each one is about the size of a thumbnail. They are made of a shiny paper.

I remember seeing them around my grandma's house as a kid so I think they are approx 100 years old.

Any ideas?

For pressing in hot wax to seal an envelope maybe?

They look like the top bit on a wine bottle?

What do they look like at the back ?

I was wondering about the Sealing wax option too.

itbemay1 · 10/10/2019 18:42

They're letter seals. Used to seal the envelope and the imprint would be the senders 'stamp' it looks like they've been pealed off and kept

HeavyChopping · 10/10/2019 18:43

They look like aged paper, as if they were once white.

Yep, agree they are the seals that have been impressed
If they had been for impressing in to wax then they would have been reversed in image but these are the right way around

HeavyChopping · 10/10/2019 18:44

They have no paper residue on the back so I'm guessing they are unused paper seals.

If I were to wet them on the back would they be adhesive?

There wouldn't be paper residue on the back, they come away clean

It's a stick of wax you hold a flame to, then drip it til it pools on the envelope, then while wet you imprint with your initial (I have a monogrammed 17th century one)

So those have been peeled off - are they from one person, one initial? Perhaps a love in the past?

Here's my wax - can't find my monogrammed seal

No they wouldn't be adhesive. As LaurieFairyCake said, you melt the wax onto the paper than imprint the wax before it hardens. The melted wax sticks to the paper so unless you melt it again they won't be adhesive.
