Would you get your haircut by an ex convict? You don't get to know what they were convicted of, only that they spent time in prison and are fully trained and have been rehabilitated into society.

OP posts:
Crinkle77 · 09/10/2019 21:14

Yes

coconuttelegraph · 09/10/2019 21:19

No idea why anyone would think this was a problem

I assume you are lacking in imagination then, I wouldn't want to have my hair cut by a convicted murderer, sex offender, paedophile, anyone who'd been cruel to a child. Obviously I'm not in the cool majority.

WickedLemon · 09/10/2019 21:28

How do you know one hasn't cut your hair, cooked or served you a meal, driven your bus to work etc already?

I don’t Confused

But that’s the whole point of the OP... in this hypothetical situation you do know and that’s what’s she’s asking.

I know for a fact that I’ve never had my hair cut by a rapist as I’ve only ever had my hair cut by a woman.

But I think it’s great all you cool posters would happily get your kids hair cut by a paedophile, because you know everyone deserves a second chance. Hmm

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/10/2019 21:36

That's the last two posted using 'cool' as an insulting synonym for gullible.

I'm practical. If you don't employ and house people coming out of prison, they are massively more likely to reoffend, which makes us all less safe.

The specifics of who houses and employs sex offenders in particular are extremely difficult. Recidivism is high, risk is high but unless we lock men up forever who commit those offences, what do you suggest?

WildCherryBlossom · 09/10/2019 21:37

Wickedlemon the OP didn't ask about children. But anyway do you leave your 5 year old alone with the barber / hairdresser? I'm always there.

I suggest that of someone wants to find jobs for ex sex offenders they find them jobs that don’t bring them into contact with the general public on a daily basis for starters.

AthollPlace · 09/10/2019 21:39

As long as they weren’t violent offenders. I don’t want dangerous people holding sharp implements next to my neck.

WickedLemon · 09/10/2019 21:42

Sorry @WildCherryBlossom I didn’t realise that no sex offender has ever groomed or abused a child right under the parents nose, of course silly me, that must never happen.

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/10/2019 21:42

I suggest that of someone wants to find jobs for ex sex offenders they find them jobs that don’t bring them into contact with the general public on a daily basis for starters.

I suggest you look at the numbers of sex offenders, the average level of education, the availability of jobs with no human contact and think about how that would work.

We ALL want to find jobs for ex offenders. Because the alternative is MORE offending.

vampirethriller · 09/10/2019 21:43

Wouldn't bother me

PennysPocket · 09/10/2019 21:43

I don’t want my hair cut by rapists, paedophiles, or violent offenders.

You have probably bought bread, had you bins emptied, had your car serviced and bought your weekly shop from any of them.

You are told the are ex- cons. Agree to a hair cut or not.

Kyvia · 09/10/2019 21:47

Honestly, without any other info about the nature of crime: female ex-con, yes, male, no. Male convict is just so so so much more likely to have a history of violence. Having witnessed brutal male violence up close (he was convicted of attempted murder, bladed weapon), I think there are levels of crime I’d be very sceptical about success of rehabilitation, and would never be comfortable in the presence of someone I knew was capable of that level of violence.

Elieza · 09/10/2019 22:14

In a salon I’d have no issues. The salon wouldnt let the my cut hair if they were crap.
A third of all males in this county have a criminal record.
That’s a lot. And if they don’t find jobs they can go back into their old ways. They’ve done their time. They deserve a fresh start. I’d let him cut my hair fine.

Haggisfish · 09/10/2019 22:25

Yes I would.

lastqueenofscotland · 09/10/2019 22:36

Yes

Hadenoughofitall441 · 09/10/2019 22:50

As long as they are good at it I don’t see a problem. It’s non of my business tbh unless they were creepy then I might give it a miss

MysweetAudrina · 09/10/2019 22:57

Well to be fair I would feel safer getting hair cut than I might giving them a set of my house keys to cut.

IWouldPreferNotTo · 09/10/2019 23:00

I'm getting my hair cut in south London for a low price, I'm not worried about a bit of paper

LemonPrism · 09/10/2019 23:04

Sure

KennDodd · 09/10/2019 23:07

Yes.

ArabellaDoreenFig · 09/10/2019 23:07

If it was a woman who had been in prison then it wouldn’t bother me all.

If it was a man that had been in prison then i wouldn’t use your salon.

Couldn’t care less if anyone thinks that’s sexist, it is what is, and having taught in prisons (albeit a long time ago) I stand by it.

Ohyesiam · 09/10/2019 23:11

Why not? People deserve a second chance.

batvixen123 · 09/10/2019 23:11

I hate how MN uses "cool" in this horrible sneering way for anyone showing the slightest bit of faith in human nature or optimism for their fellow humans. Like the worst imaginable thing is to want the world to be a nicer place and people to be pleasant and to pay attention to the vast amounts of evidence that says that reintegrating ex prisoners in society vastly reduces the likelihood of reoffending and makes society a safer place for all of us.

SingingLily · 09/10/2019 23:19

Just to put it in perspective, how many hairdressers and barbers of good character have clients who are ex-convicts and either don't realise or don't mind? Quite a few, I reckon. Even with scissors around. It works both ways.

I understand why people are genuinely concerned about scissors/razors wielded by violent offenders but generally speaking, those who serve time for violence are likely to be subject to licence conditions on release and supervision by probation officers. It's not a perfect system by any means but as a broad rule of thumb, someone with a history of using weapons would not be allowed to work in a place where wielding scissors is the norm.

Similarly, a sex offender would be on the sex offenders' register - again, not a perfect system, but working in proximity to children or women would not be permitted.

It wouldn't bother me in the least if an ex-prisoner was cutting my hair as long as they did a decent job.

PixieDustt · 09/10/2019 23:25

Ermmmm Confused
