Would you get your haircut by an ex convict?

Would you get your haircut by an ex convict? You don't get to know what they were convicted of, only that they spent time in prison and are fully trained and have been rehabilitated into society.

That sounds really lovely. I'm all for giving people a second chance.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 09/10/2019 19:08

In a salon Yes, they are cutting my hair not putting fingers in to my vagina 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thing is if they are in work they are obviously trying to turn the life around after a fuck up earlier in life. They will of served whatever sentence they received, should they never be able to live a life ever again?

I bet a few hairdressers have a criminal record, just normally you wouldn’t know. No it wouldn’t change my opinion if I knew.

Thegullfromhull · 09/10/2019 19:10

If my female hairdresser confessed she’d been in prison for shoplifting or something I think I’d probably admire her for managing to get her life back on track. It wouldn’t bother me too much in those circumstances. I realise shop theft isn’t a victimless crime though.
But I’d be gutted if I found out I’d lined the pockets of a convicted perpetrator of violence/ abuse against women or children, of sexual offences, or of domestic burglary . Those crimes in particular. Though there are probably lots more.

Alsohuman · 09/10/2019 19:11

No idea why anyone would think this was a problem.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 09/10/2019 19:11

Yes.

A (female) friend of mine is an ex convict for a violent crime involving a deadly weapon. She has turned her life around, the crime was 10 years ago and she is now a manager in a professional role. Nobody would have a clue about her past if they didn't know her.

CampingItUp · 09/10/2019 19:13

I would not go anywhere near any such business or social enterprise unless:
The organisation was skilled and experienced in supporting ex offenders and addressed all their needs
They could assure me that none had been convicted of sexual offences or violence, especially against women. I would be very uncomfortable about such up-close contact with someone like that.

In general if the quality of service was good I would actively support such an organisation.

OrchidInTheSun · 09/10/2019 19:14

I only ever have women cutting my hair. Given the chance of them serving time for a violent offence, I would be super happy to have them cut my hair.

managedmis · 09/10/2019 19:16

Er, yes

How do you know more folks are ex cons?

Cinammoncake · 09/10/2019 19:16

Yes. I'd only be concerned with whether they were a good hairdresser. People have to get a chance to rehabilitate

saffy1234 · 09/10/2019 19:18

Yes i would .Prison is as much about rehabilitation as it is punishment,or at least it should be.

Spam88 · 09/10/2019 19:19

I don't think I'd be bothered, but then I also don't think I'd opt to book an appointment specifically at a salon staffed with ex-convicts when there are lots of other salons to choose from.

RiddleyW · 09/10/2019 19:21

1/3 of men & 1/4 of women have a criminal record. It's probably already happened to me.

No way have a quarter of women got a conviction. Where is that statistic from?

tinyvulture · 09/10/2019 19:22

Yes, I’m all for this as a business model and imagine lots of people would be.
A member of my family is an ex-convict. They are a very nice person now. Everyone deserve’s another chance.

MrsMaiselsMuff · 09/10/2019 19:23

Surely the question is, how do you know you're not already? How many of us know our hairdresser's true life history?

Wouldn't bother me. As long as they're good at it, that's all that matters.

PawPawNoodle · 09/10/2019 19:23

I'm getting a tattoo by a murderer soon, one that's technically still imprisoned 🤷‍♀️

Thegullfromhull · 09/10/2019 19:23

If it was £12 for a women’s wham bam thank you cut, and they did it on the spot for walk ins with no appointments or faff, I reckon it could be popular as a salon idea.

LynetteScavo · 09/10/2019 19:35

I thought many barbers were ex-offenders because they learned the trade in prison then were able to rent a chair as self employed when released, so it's the perfect job for an ex offenders

I went to a restaurant in Middlesbrough just because the chefs were recovering addicts , ex-offenders and the long-term unemployed

OrchidInTheSun · 09/10/2019 19:35

33% of men; 9% of women. Men commit crimes at much higher rates than women. Let's not pretend that isn't true.

Chloe9 · 09/10/2019 19:37

95% or prisoners are make, 5% female as well

FunOnTheBeach20 · 09/10/2019 19:41

For all I know I do get my hair cut by an ex convict.

Exactly.

Roselilly36 · 09/10/2019 19:44

Of course, good people sometimes make bad decisions, if they are trained and working they deserve a second chance IMHO.

Mummybares · 09/10/2019 19:50

No i wouldnt because they would probably be freshly out.
I just find it unsettling..i wouldnt eat if i knew its an ex con kitchen.
Sure we hire and pay ex cons unknowingly but for me why would i knowingly go into it?
Having a criminal record is not the same as having been to prison Hmm

Mummybares · 09/10/2019 19:53

Its not really an argument saying how do you know you dont already, the point is that you go knowingly.

Chloe9 · 09/10/2019 19:53

@Mummybares

Sure, I know that, but my OP specified that you didn't know the crime only that they had been in prison and were rehabilitated and fully trained.

OP posts:
Mummybares · 09/10/2019 19:54

I didnt mention anything about what sort of crime. I do know its serious enough to end up incarcinated.
