Hi

Wracking my brains trying to find this novel I loved and Google coming up with nothing. I remember nearly all the storyline haha but not the name or author.

Story set in Scotland, Glasgow I think. A young man living with parents studying medicine to be doctor like his dad but he wants to be an artist instead. I think it's set in 1920s. He has a sister. I feel like his name was Alexander Mc-something. His sister takes a job at an abortion clinic.

He meets a French woman and falls in love with her and moves to France in the end.

That's it for now. Please help Smile I loved that book.

No Mean City?

PralineCookie · 08/10/2019 21:52

How long ago did you read it?

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 08/10/2019 21:58

About 10-15 years ago perhaps.

Not no mean city. The protagonist was a young man studying to be a doctor but hated it and wanted to be an artist.

Trigger warning this bit...but his sister was raped in the book.

There's an author Alexander McCall Smith who has written books set in Scotland. I only read a couple though and have no idea what else he's written.

quitecontrary123 · 08/10/2019 22:09

I was also thinking Alexander McCall Smith. 44 Scotland Street series? He also wrote the No.1 Ladies Detective Agency series.

Lanark: A Life in four books?

chergar · 08/10/2019 22:22

What genre was it? Do you remember the cover?

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 08/10/2019 22:26

Cover was yellow and featured the French woman. I'm sure one of the names was Sophie.

It was a female author I'm pretty sure.

A. J. Cronin wrote books set in Scotland, many with a medical background.

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 08/10/2019 22:27

Thanks for all the suggestions by the way. I feel like I'm making this up 😂

It was more of a love story than medical. He was just studying it.

Could it be ‘Of Human Bondage’? It’s one of my favourite books.

ChessIsASport · 08/10/2019 22:31

Sorry didn’t see the bit about the sister. I don’t think it is.

UnsureOfOutcome · 08/10/2019 22:35

Maybe Maggie O'Farrell...?

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 08/10/2019 22:36

The sister went to work on an abortion clinic/family planning and got raped on a house visit.
