How would you pronounce Alastair if you aren’t Scottish?

DH and I aren’t sure and we have a friend who is one. Might have to ask his wife but I’d rather not.

Just call him Al.

Definitely with emphasis on the AL, to answer your q. What follows will vary by accent. Emphasis on STAIR would sounds very odd, very over-enunciated and upper class.

I’d say AL a stuh. Home Counties accent. The other way sounds outrageously affected to me, but I’m probably influenced by this slip of a lad I work with
