How would you pronounce Alastair if you aren’t Scottish?

Al a stair
Or
Al a ster / Al a stuh

DH and I aren’t sure and we have a friend who is one. Might have to ask his wife but I’d rather not.

Just call him Al.

Definitely with emphasis on the AL, to answer your q. What follows will vary by accent. Emphasis on STAIR would sounds very odd, very over-enunciated and upper class.

Ali-stair

ElizaPancakes · 07/10/2019 11:03

I’d say AL a stuh. Home Counties accent. The other way sounds outrageously affected to me, but I’m probably influenced by this slip of a lad I work with

Sockworkshop · 07/10/2019 11:27

Are you saying Ali-stuh like Hollister ?Eliza

Al-a-stair.
I sit on a monthly committee and our Al-a-stair is my secret crush [swoon]
The other (non-swooning) members also call him Al-a-stair too.

Glitterfisher · 07/10/2019 12:30

Allister or alistuh (south east)

amusedbush · 07/10/2019 12:51

I'm Scottish and I went to primary school with a boy whose mum would sternly tell off anyone who called him al-iss-ter - he was al-iss-DARE Hmm

Thanks everyone! I think we will need to ask, as there’s not quite consensus. (Most of you agree with me, hee hee.)
