Hey! No knocking Pathfinder. First time I've ever managed to GM well is with Pathfinder. But I don't think it's lighter.

OP, if she has people to play with, I agree with everyone else, a players handbook and a set of dice is all she needs. If you're feeling generous, monster manuals are great fun (eyes shelf of 3.5 ed MM and Pathfinder Bestiaries).

Currently eavesdropping on DC2's game that was due to finish at 10pm. They're having a blast of a battle.

I'm so happy to hear D and D is having a resurgence! She'll need a group. Happy days.

It's true that you do need a group of people to play but please don't let this put you/your DD off.

The instruction manuals are stunning in their own right and they provide lots of information on character and world building so they can be great resources for inspiration/creativity for other activities (storywriting etc).

There is also a fantasic book called Art and Arcana which is a visual history of d&d and contains all sorts of interesting info about how the game was invented/old advertisements/lore etc. It is defo aimed at adults but it could still be enjoyed by a teenager who is interested. I have a copy myself because d&d fascinates me - but I have never actually played a game as I don't have anybody to play with!
