Sewing machine gone yellow?

My lovely emerald 203 sewing machine has over time gone very yellow Sad I have tried lots of things to whiten it and nothing is shifting it. It's better than it was I suppose. I was thinking could maybe washi tape the front with all different types of tape here is the type I have....although mine is yellow

Confused it's a tool...not an ornament! Why would you care? Do you have it on display? Mine's always in it's cover and tucked away!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/10/2019 13:39

It's just what happens to plastic over time!

I would find washi tape very distracting!

IShitGlitter · 06/10/2019 13:59

Yes it's out in my kitchen on one of the low sides it's like a country style kitchen.

It's just the plastic ageing. Not sure there's much to do about it. Wonder if you can keep a strip of decorative cloth under the presser foot? You can change it out with the seasons

BillHadersNewWife · 06/10/2019 16:36

Even if it is a country style kitchen, that sewing machine is not in the style of a country kitchen! Get the cover on it and put it away...it's not as if it's an antique one or something.

FelicityBeedle · 06/10/2019 16:38

It’s probably went yellow because you’ve had it on display! I doubt the sunlight does the plastic ant good

IShitGlitter · 06/10/2019 17:21

What's with all the exclamation marks?

I wasnt asking if it matched my kitchen, or why its yellow. I know its yellow because I've had it out, I use it a hell of alot and would be a faff to put away each time. I like the idea of a fabric swatch under the presser foot.

Well I think people are weirded out that you care about your plastic sewing machine's colour...or that you mentioned your kitchen is country style...as though that made a difference.

Soola · 06/10/2019 18:39

Why don’t you shit on it?

goingtotown · 06/10/2019 19:11

Soola is that supposed to be funny?

BishopFrownofStThigh · 06/10/2019 19:12

Soola...

Helpmedecide123 · 06/10/2019 19:57

You can buy stuff to whiten it. Google "plastic whitener"

LoseLooseLucy · 06/10/2019 19:59

I was 😳 at Soola's comment... But then read OPs name...

BarbarAnna · 06/10/2019 20:03

I’m sorry OP but you must lead a very stress free life to worry about this.

On the flip side, have you tried Barkeepers Friend?

Soola · 07/10/2019 02:38

@LoseLooseLucy I’m glad you got it! @goingtotown
and @BishopFrownofStThigh didn’t! 😂

IShitGlitter · 07/10/2019 02:52

I know it's odd that I mentioned the style of kitchen but I thought it might be relevant for some odd reason Blush as in it's not just plonked on the kitchen side. It's in a little corner in the kitchen not that that matters I don't like the look of it all yellow sitting there it looks scruffy Blush........anyway am going to try some of the things mentioned here then if all else fails washi tape it.

Soola I now get it Grin

BishopFrownofStThigh · 07/10/2019 02:54

@Soola I definitely didn't!

I was relieved when a pp explained as I thought there was someone extremely weird running around.

Yeah I've got no answer to original question though aside from ageing.

I would make a fabric cover that suited the style of your house and pop in over when not using it.

minesagin37 · 07/10/2019 04:03

It's the effect of sunlight on plastic. They are designed to be put away when not in use!

BarbaraofSeville · 07/10/2019 08:37

It's keeping it out on display that's made it go yellow due to the effect of ultraviolet light in sunlight (and maybe normal lighting) on plastic.

Things that are made of white plastic and are meant to be exposed to sunlight have special chemicals in them to stop them going yellow - as in uPVC windows, early ones went yellow, so the u stands for ultraviolet resistant.

My 15 YO cheapy Lidl sewing machine is still gleaming white because I keep it in it's original box in a cupboard and hardly ever use it.
