Hot elbow?

Fredastaireatemyjamsandwich · 05/10/2019 20:03

That’s it! My elbow is extremely hot, or an area of it, about 3cm x 1cm. The rest of my arm is cool. I asked DH as I thought I was going mad, and he said it is boiling. It is not inflamed, it does not hurt. I have not done anything strenuous. It is around the area I broke my elbow and had surgery as a kid 45 years ago, with absolutely no problems since. You can barely see the scar.

I have had a cough/cold virus this week and had a temperature for about 24 hours a couple of days ago. Has anyone else had something similar?

Yes - it was tennis elbow. It didn't hurt unless I leant on it but it was very hot. I had some fluid drained off it (sounds terrible but it was painless) in A and E and some local anaesthetic. It was fine after that. No problems ever since.

Is it red in any way? This is how my cellulitis started out. It can get quite serious if not treated with antibiotics.

Thanks for replying. It’s slightly red and feels a little hard to touch, like an insect bite. I drew a line round it with a pen and it hasn’t really grown overnight. I have taken an anti histimane, but to no avail. I’ll drop by my pharmacist tomorrow, to let them have a look.

If you can get to a pharmacist today I would it could be something simple but if it is the start of cellulitis it can change quite quickly, better to get it checked and it be nothing than wait and it get worse.

Thank you. I'm on the bus to the hospital now, as they have a big Lloyd's pharmacy in the grounds, so hopefully have a pharmacist on duty!

OH had this. His turned out to be bursitis. His started out like you describe and then got inflamed. Keep an eye on it. Hope it improves soon.

Went to A&E in the end, and they gave me antibiotics. Hopefully it has been caught in time, and I won’t need it intravenously. Sincere thanks to those who urged me to go. I was going to leave it until tomorrow, but so glad I didn’t.

Cellulitis it was.

So glad you went and got it seen too, with things like that 24hrs can make a big difference in how severe it is and what treatment is needed. Fingers crossed the antibiotics do the trick.

I was going to helpfully ask if it smelled after another thread this year (who knew elbows could be so problematic). Glad you have had a diagnosis and can take the right action!
