Got horrendous toothache and can’t get a dentists appt til. Monday afternoon.

Have some cocodamol 500mg paracetomal and 30mg codeine phosphate and have taken a dose a couple of hours ago but it really hasn’t done much for the pain.

Any ideas?

Alternate the cocodamol with ibuprofen.
Poor you

summersun0191 · 05/10/2019 17:35

My dentist told me not to use codiene for toothache as it has no effect at all, ibuprofen and paracetamol is what he recommended.

I hope you feel better soon x

x2boys · 05/10/2019 17:36

Nurofen plus have ,about 12 mg of codeine in them as well as ibuprofen but as you already have a higher dose of codeine that ,just try ibuprofen on its . Clove oil?I

Take 2 x 30/500 cocodamol & 400mg ibuprofen - these 3 drugs are safe together.

Bobbiepin · 05/10/2019 17:42

Ring 111 for an out of hours appointment if you are in that much pain.

lljkk · 05/10/2019 17:46

Clove oil is v. nasty, burns in feeling & effect, I can't recommend.
Tea tree oil does not hurt & may kill germs.
Assuming it's an infection, salt water gargle may help... you probably need antibiotics otherwise.

BringOnTheScience · 05/10/2019 17:47

Go and ask a pharmacist. This is exactly the sort of advice that they are trained & qualified to give.

purplepingu · 05/10/2019 17:49

Had toothache recently and the only thing that took the pain away to a point where I could cope was holding salt water on it for a few seconds at a time. And repeating about twenty times an hour just to get through the day!

IHaveBrilloHair · 05/10/2019 17:50

Solpadeine Max

ohtheholidays · 05/10/2019 18:07

You can pick up some really strong teething gels now for adults OP.

I used Oragel Rapid toothache relief it tastes bloody awful but it is very strong,I also used anbesol adult strength gel.

HairyFloppins · 05/10/2019 18:13

I had the same a few weeks back. Mine was Irreversible pulpitis. The only thing that helped in the end was swishing cold water constantly for about two days until the tooth died. Then I had it pulled.

Tooth ache is the pits OP, hope it goes very soon!

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 05/10/2019 18:15

Seconding Clove Oil and oragel rapid. The only things that worked for me at all.

pottedshrimps · 05/10/2019 18:19

I used sore throat spray on mine when I had an abscess. That worked for a while. If you dab clove oil sparingly onto the area with a cotton bud that can help with the worst of the pain. Avoid getting any at all on the insides of the cheek and lips though.

I took paracetamol, 60mg codeine, spray, clove oil and swilled chlorhexadine mouthwash around the area. The codeine helps you sleep and distances your mind from the pain somewhat.

simonisnotme · 05/10/2019 18:21

dont use clove oil
its fucking awful and tastes vile

YouBoggleMyMind · 05/10/2019 18:23

Liquid ambesol, you can get it over the counter. Paracetamol, Ibuprofen and codeine are going to be all you can get before Monday otherwise. Maybe a hot water bottle or a TENs machine?

SinkGirl · 05/10/2019 18:24

Orajel (the max strength stuff)
400mg ibuprofen
Your co-codamol

There’s nothing stronger available than the co-codamol you have. You could try voltarol gel on the affected side of your face.

Hot water bottle as hot as you can stand against the affected side of your face is the thing I find best.

Swish hot salt water around your mouth

Weirdly, an ice cube rubbed on the webbing between your thumb and first finger helps a bit - I don’t know why.

I’m waiting for extensive dental treatment under sedation and get bouts of awful pain. It is the worst.

FuriousVexation · 05/10/2019 18:33

TENS machine on your face LOL

You're probably pretty much fucked til Monday unless you can find a close friend or family member with an unused stockpile of prescrition painkillers.

Assuming you can't get any pharmaceuticals, you need to just tell yourself that the pain is not dangerous and that it's simply warning you that something needs fixing or is currently healing. I've found fear of pain is actually more damaging that the pain itself in most cases. This requires a real change of attitude but is the best thing I have found for chronic pain.

WrongKindOfFace · 05/10/2019 18:34

Ring 111. There should be some emergency provision in your area.

scaevola · 05/10/2019 18:37

Make sure you do not exceed the maximum dose of paracetamol (check labels to see how much in in which painkillers)

Alternate with ibuprofen and aspirin (if you can take it)

And if that doesn't hold it, OOH doctor for stronger drunks on prescription.

scaevola · 05/10/2019 18:39

Drugs not drunks!

Don't mix alcohol with max doses of painkillers, no matter how tempting

If you have any Night Nurse in the house, you couid try that at bedtime

MrMeSeeks · 05/10/2019 18:55

Solpadeine Max
Op is on higher strength codeine.

Use your painkillers and ibuprofen
Use some orajel max strength is the best one, or ambesol

Likethebattle · 05/10/2019 18:58

@SinkGirl never ever ever use heat on toothache. My dentist said it can draw the infection into the facial tissues. Use cold instead like packs of peas to numb and reduce swelling.

I bought ibuprofen over the counter abroad and they gave me 600mg despite the pharmacist here saying 400mg is the strongest they would give. You need to leave 8 hours between doses though.

EdithWeston · 05/10/2019 18:59

Clove oil is the traditional (alternative) remedy.

No idea if it really works, but if you're throwing everything at this, it certainly won't do any harm and might help

OurChristmasMiracle · 05/10/2019 19:00

Difflam mouthwash- it’s should reduce swelling and numb the pain.
