Got horrendous toothache and can’t get a dentists appt til. Monday afternoon.

Have some cocodamol 500mg paracetomal and 30mg codeine phosphate and have taken a dose a couple of hours ago but it really hasn’t done much for the pain.

Any ideas?

That sucks - it’s the only thing that helps me!

palahvah · 05/10/2019 19:27

When I had my wisdom teeth out I was given 900mg of ibuprofen to take every 4 hours

TigerJoy · 05/10/2019 19:27

Clove oil

But call 111 - i had to see an emergency dentist one bank holiday and I got an appointment the same day. Don't suffer! And poor you!

Syndol or Solpadeine Max.

onlyhereforthefood · 05/10/2019 19:54

Another vote for the max strength orajel, tastes vile but makes you feel like you've had a numbing injection!

SylvanianFrenemies · 05/10/2019 20:00

I found a heat pack better than painkillers for toothache. Throw everything at it to survive til you get help.

Rosebud21 · 05/10/2019 20:01

Solpadeine max has a higher dose of codeine phosphate (12.8mg) compared to over the counter co-codamol (8mg), & each tablet contains paracetamol 500mg. You can also take a non steroidal anti-inflammatory with codeine/paracetamol. Feminax ultra/naproxen 250mg works better than ibuprofen (400mg) for some people

madcatladyforever · 05/10/2019 20:03

If I'm in terrible pain i buy dihydrocodeine online. dont make a habit of it though.

CuppaTandCake · 05/10/2019 20:08

Extreme abscess on bottom row 3 weeks ago landed me in A&E maxed out on regular analgesia.
I was seen by emergency dentist the same day and ended up on Amoxycillin, Metronidozole and dihydracodiene 30mg to take with paracetamol. Added ibuprofen as and when required too.
You have my full sympathy, no pain like it.
Please call 111, they should be able to find an OOH dentist in your area for tomorrow

Chloe9 · 05/10/2019 20:20

Nothing stronger than what you've already taken. Although I've found baby bonjela works better than codeine when my tooth hurts. It's like the codeine does absolutely nothing but block up my Bowels or maybe make me tired. Clove oil is the best though.

Nat6999 · 05/10/2019 20:31

Please don't use a hot water bottle. I have a friend who is in hospital tonight, last monday she used a hot water bottle for period pain, stuck it down her leggings whilst watching television. The bottle split & scalded her stomach & thighs, she had skin grafts yesterday & is unable to come home because they can't get the pain levels under control. She will be scarred for life because of something thousands of people use every day & is asking all her friends to share her plight as a warning to others.

Miss1973HulaHoopChampion · 05/10/2019 20:36

The dentist also told me that for some reason codeine doesn't work v well with tooth pain

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 05/10/2019 20:41

Feminax ultra has naproxen. I don't know if it works with toothache but it did allow me to get up off the floor when I fell and did my back in. You have to pretend it's for period pain though else they won't let you have it. I tried to buy some for DH after his lung removal when he had forgotten to take his morphine with him on a day out, and because I was honest about who it was for, I was refused the sale.

Hope it gets better soon, nothing worse than toothache that can't be soothed.

SinkGirl · 05/10/2019 21:08

I don’t understand the codeine comments. Your body converts codeine into morphine, and oramorph is often given after dental procedures. Maybe it’s just not strong enough.

TeacupDrama · 05/10/2019 21:15

dihydrocodeine has been removed from the painkillers dentists can prescribe as it does not work well with toothache, different painkillers work with different types of pain ( I don't mean the same nurofen in 3 different boxes for head aches in one box period pain in another box etc)
alternate paracetamol with ibuprofen ( unless asthmatic) CAFFEINE can boost effect of paracetamol

AMAM8916 · 05/10/2019 21:19

For extreme dental pain, take a swig of either vodka or whiskey and hold it in your mouth over the sore area for about 2 minutes. It hurts like hell but you'll get relief for an hour or so then just repeat again.

Naproxen is probably the best thing for dental pain. Paracetamol, codeine etc aren't anti inflammatories so don't work the best. Dental pain is almost almost due to something being inflamed. Naproxen is gentler on the stomach than ibuprofen but works so well and knocks you out

Moondust001 · 05/10/2019 21:20

Tea tree oil does not hurt & may kill germs.
It definitely kills germs. It may also kill YOU! Tea Tree is poisonous and should never be ingested. Despite the fact that some oral hygiene products add small amounts of tea tree, it really shouldn't be put in the mouth for any reason. It can put you in a coma or kill you.

PrimalLass · 05/10/2019 21:23

I had an infected root filling in the summer. I was totally overdosing and not sleeping. I was very unwell.
Try and get an emergency appointment tomorrow. It is awful - follow the advice above except for the one about avoiding codeine as it can really help.

Also icing it.

PrimalLass · 05/10/2019 21:24

Maybe a hot water bottle or a TENs machine?

Heat can really help with the pain but can make an infection much worse. Try not to.

PrimalLass · 05/10/2019 21:26

Alternate with ibuprofen and aspirin

Do not take these together.

Youngatheart00 · 05/10/2019 21:57

Wow lots of (occasionally conflicting) advice here, but thank you to all who have offered advice. The codiene must have done something, after the second dose, as I’ve been asleep most of the evening and the pain has eased a bit although woke with the driest mouth ever.

I’m due another dose now so will keep it up and I also have some cordysyl in the bathroom cupboard from when DH had wisdom tooth pain a while ago.

It’s not often I wish Sundays away but I will this week.

Soak a cotton wool pad in brandy or whiskey & lay it over the tooth.

SinkGirl · 05/10/2019 22:11

Just make sure you drink plenty of water or get some stool softeners (dulcoease is good) if taking codeine regularly as the constipation can be as bad as the pain you’re taking it for!

zenasfuck · 05/10/2019 22:17

I have regular tooth infections and abscesses because I should have had impacted wisdom teeth removed 10 years ago 🙄
600mg ibuprofen every 6 hours, alternated with 1000 mg paracetamol every 4 hours and anbesol liquid on the tooth and gum is the only combination I've found that helps
Hot salt water rinses are also good

longwayoff · 05/10/2019 22:47

Buy some Orajel gel, with benzocaine, to numb pains in mouth.use with your other painkillers
