<disgusting alert> How to get rid of thick craggy mucus in throat?

DeborahAnnabelToo · 05/10/2019 08:19

I'm just getting over a heavy cold. My throat is full of awful mucus that won't seem to budge. I feel like I'm choking on it. What works to get rid of it? Drinking lots of water to thin it? Tia

Avoid dairy
Drink hot water with lemon and honey several times a day.

Yes drink lots of water. You could try some steam inhalation too, with a bit of vick in the water.

Chilli powder in a capsule or a recipe with plenty in will shift it with startling ease.

Drink plenty of fluids, decongestants might help. No need to avoid milk or dairy, it's a myth that it make mucus worse.

Nice spicy fragrant soup, like Tom Yum.

It isnt for some people

Reallybadidea · 05/10/2019 09:31

Such a small number of people that no scientific study has ever been able to find evidence of it.

Oh I have this too right now. It's gross, my nose is totally clear so I can't just blow my nose. I took a sudafed last night before bed and I that helped.

FaithInfinity · 05/10/2019 09:38

Steam, steam, steam! Best advice I had was from a nurse practitioner who said this. I felt like I had a golf ball of phlegm stuck in my throat. She said breathe over a bowl of steam for 10 minutes four times a day. It helped to shift the snot.

raspberryrippleicecream · 05/10/2019 09:42

Yes to steam. I also find the Sudafed that you buy from the pharmacy counter helpful but not the type you buy off the shelf. Also, don't take them at night as they are non-drowsy.

Ah thank you! A golf ball of mucus - disgustingly accurate description! I will try steam as well as water and I'm making some spicy butternut squash soup also. Thanks

Oh I’m at this stage too.
Actually no cold just a hideously saw throat and have lost my voice. Woke up yesterday to the same claggy symptoms, my body is ejecting vast amounts of virtually solid green matter. Gross Envy
Don’t like taking tablets but had to take some paracetamol in the middle of the night because I was also starting to get an earache. So annoyed!

MustardScreams · 05/10/2019 10:08

Chilli, drink loads of water, avoid dairy for a week or so, steam. That usually helps me. I drink tons of honey and lemon also.

Blobby10 · 05/10/2019 10:11

I’ve got this too 😷x decongestants are helping my throat clear and now I’m on day 4 it’s starting to loosen and coming down my nose 🤢x it’s the blocked ears I’m finding most difficult to cope with though ☹️

DogsandBoysmeanMud · 05/10/2019 10:18

Hot water with honey, lemon and ginger are my DHs fave remedy. With brandy or whisky gargle at night!

KUGA · 05/10/2019 10:26

CusionCovers isspot on.
Also warm .

PoptartPoptart · 05/10/2019 10:33

Gargle with warm salt water several times a day. Obviously don’t swallow it though!
Just get a glass of slightly cooled boiled water and add a teaspoon of salt and stir and let it dissolve.
Honestly it works.
