So I’ve been getting frequent headaches and I’ve read online that some people have found that an ear piercing has helped them. a daith piercing I think is what it’s called?
Does anyone here have any experiences of it? I realise it may all just be nonsense or placebo effect but I’d be interested to hear either way
Thanks

Was expecting a much ruder piercing Blush

But yes! I have suffered with terrible migraines since childhood and heard about these daith piercings. I was very cynical but in the hangover of yet another migraine, I had mine pierced. It’s been 6 months and I have had one migraine - my usual was two per month.

I don’t know why, but I’m not arguing with it.

Not me personally, but my adult niece got a daith piercing to try to reduce her migraines. She says they are less frequent and not as severe since she got it done.

@ImTheBatman that’s great! Was it very painful?

Hi, I used to suffer with terrible migraine, I got the piercing and have only had one migraine since. It took 3 months to heal but it's absolutely fine and I forget it's there most of the time.

Cocolapew · 03/10/2019 20:59

I got it done a few years ago and have barely had one since. It doesn't work for everyone but it's worth a go. Out of 6 people in work who have it, all have seen a massive reduction in migraines.

Firefly89 · 03/10/2019 21:02

Yes got mine done 2 years ago, I thought it would be a placebo thing but i liked the look of them anyway. Now I rarely have migraines or headaches . Even through pregnancy barely had any.
It did hurt getting it done (I'm not good with pain mind) but totally worth it.
Also mine took around 6/9 months to heal if you like the look go for it. Bare in mind it doesnt work for everyone but most people in know have said its reduced headaches Smile

PinkOboe · 03/10/2019 21:03

It didn’t work for me

Pearlyxdrop · 03/10/2019 21:04

Brilliant, thanks everyone!
Might be a daft question but I get headaches only on the right side of my head...does that mean I have to get the right ear pierced or does it not matter?

DD had one. No migraines since! A colleague has one in each year. She used to get migraines weekly but has about 1-2 per year now.

KevinsCarter · 03/10/2019 21:21

I have a daith. Painful when it is done and after until you take ibupofen, heals well. Just get it done. Its very quick and looks pretty.
Disclaimer; I don't really get migraines. I just like piercings.

ImTheBatman · 03/10/2019 21:23

It was a little painful @Pearlyxdrop but nothing too bad (and I’m a mard arse).

Cocolapew · 03/10/2019 21:32

I got mine done on the side I got migraines. It healed pretty quick tbh. I cleaned it with a cotton bud and saline. I've never taken it out, I still have the original ring in.

KingBobra · 03/10/2019 21:34

Didn't work for me.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 03/10/2019 22:15

Oh interesting. My migraines have been getting more frequent Ang longer but they aren't that bad (I don't usually have to take to bed/dark room, etc) but I'm worn out from them (they can last a week). Any meds I've tried have made me really sick or just not worked. I'll look into this.

Pearlyxdrop · 04/10/2019 18:02

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and experiences! Definitely keen to have it done now! I’m desperate at this point so will try anything! 😂 I’ve got another cartilage piercing in my ear which absolutely killed but I’ll just have to grin and bear having the daith done!

I don’t think it works, based on research not anecdotes. Have a look at the migraine trusts website and it confirms this.

I have piercings and a good friend who is a professional piercer. She makes sure she tells everyone that this won’t solve their issues.

Anyway, as others have said if you wanted a other piercing anyway then go for it and love lost, and if the placebo effect says it’ll cure you then all’s the more. But scientifically? Unlikely to do much.

An other not a other Confused

TinyOrangePumpkin · 04/10/2019 18:25

It's not been a success for me tbh.

I got a daith piercing about 6 months ago. I had read the research as a PP said, and there were limited results from it, mostly during the healing process which can take up to a year in some people. The neurologist I see says it might work a bit like acupuncture. But quite a few people I knew said it worked, and I was desperate to try anything!

The piercer was very unkeen to do the piercing once she knew it was for migraines, she said there's no evidence for it, but I like piercings anyway and said I would keep it even if it didn't work. And I love it, so that's a good thing!

It worked amazingly well for 2 days with no migraines at all (I get them most days). Then the migraines returned, and it hasn't helped at all since.

IfIShouldFallFromGraceWithGod · 04/10/2019 18:28

Mine has been amazing. I was getting 3 day migraines, took prescribed medication and had to go to bed
I hardly get any now and, if I do, I can get rid of them with water, paracetamol and ibuprofen. No more losing days to them
4 others had them done at a similar time to me. 1 it made no difference. 1 hasn't had a migraine since and the other 2 are more or less like me
