Is this just a mosquito bite?

We've been back from Majorca a week and DP's bites have mostly cleared up except this one. I've only just seen it but it alarmed me slightly because mine are all gone or very faint blotches.

Dp has a chest infection and sore throat/headache which he picked up on holiday a few days in and this bite happened around the same time as Far as he can recall. He's on his second lot of antibiotics since getting home as the first lot didn't work. He feels otherwise fine apart from the chest issue and has no temperature.

Not wanting to worry you unnecessarily but I'd go to my GP asap with that. It's a bullseye rash which can be characteristic of tick-borne lyme disease. Chances are it may not be, but get it looked at all the same.

That was my first thought too @keeoe but I've never seen a tick bite so Google'd it and realised it looks more like tick than mosquito bite

No GP appointments today so have to ring tomorrow morning. Not sure if out of hours would be better?

I had a mosquito bite that ended up looking like that. After a trip to the GP I had a week of antibiotics and some hydrocortisone cream they cleared up.

Keeoe · 03/10/2019 16:08

Yeah, if you've got a walk-in centre or OOH service I'd try them, be on the safe side.

Grumpyperson · 03/10/2019 16:19

You say he's already had antibiotics? If so, I think it's probably ok (as long as the second lot work), the key with possible Lymes disease is to get antibiotics early on. Keep an eye on the bite to make sure it doesn't get infected but you probably don't need an immediate GP appointment, might be worth booking an in-advance one in case it is needed.

Had he not already been on antibiotics I would totally agree with previous advice to get straight to medical attention.

Has he picked it ? It looks a bit weird for a mosquito bite to be honest .

Mentounasc · 03/10/2019 16:30

Oh dear, that does look much more like a tick than a mosquito bite. Should be ok if he was on ABs anyway, but I would definitely get to a walk-In Centre today if possible. Is Majorca an area at risk of Lyme's Disease (not all regions in Europe have ticks that carry it, but I think a bite like that always needs investigation). Disclaimer: not a HCP, just a personal opinion.

Seeline · 03/10/2019 16:42

ABs for a chest infection might not be the right ones for Lyme's.

Many of my mozzie bites end up looking just like that.

UnderTheButtNutHut · 03/10/2019 16:43

Yes he's had antibiotics for his chest from last friday and another dose prescribed today.

He said he pulled off a scab on it.

Going to go see the pharmacist and see what they say as they're open late this evening.

It is Doxycycline for tick bites/ Lyme disease.

MadisonAvenue · 03/10/2019 16:50

He should definitely see a doctor. My teenage son had a few bites like that this Summer and the GP prescribed a three week course of antibiotics, he also had to have a blood test and a follow up one a month or so later. The GP nor the colleague he called in for a second opinion could decide if they were definitely tick bites as they'd only expect to see one at a time and he had three on the same leg but they didn't take any chances and got him straight on antibiotics.

thejealouscow · 03/10/2019 17:03

This is a tick bite! The scab he pulled off may have been the body of an actual tick! Their very tiny and awful little things! I know this because I was diagnosed in August with Lyme after being bitten in italy, it's took a 3 week course of doxycycline and all was fine! I too started with flu like symptoms along with the rash! Make an appointment with the gp as soon as you can!

Keeoe · 06/10/2019 17:16

Did your DP get to the pharmacy @UnderTheButtNutHut, any updates? Hope he's doing ok.

UnderTheButtNutHut · 06/10/2019 17:43

.He did! They advised out of hours so went there and they are treating it as a tick bite and he;s got different antibiotics and getting bloods done every 4 weeks to keep an eye.

Glad I posted here, thanks for the advice! DP also very thankful that I nagged him to get seen after reading the replies here.

Looks like a tick bite to me.

Keeoe · 06/10/2019 19:10

Oh gosh. Good to hear he's getting treatment and well done on the nagging him to get it looked at!
