If you put your contact lenses in for exercise, do you shower with them in?

Do you think it's risky?

I wear disposable contacts, and it seems wasteful to pop them for an early exercise session and then throw them away and need a fresh pair for the rest of my day. I like my glasses but sometimes want the flexibility of contacts.

What do you do?

But I think your idea of leaving them in solution would work btw

Orangecake123 · 02/10/2019 19:37

Please be careful- the risk isn't worth it.

I just got the nearest to my strongest/dominant eye, thinking that as I rely more upon that image, it would be the best one to have corrected and not potentially strained.

I expect you can get ones made to match both, but I didn't have the money to look into that. I just used one of the generic online places, such as goggles4u/glasses direct (can't remember which) - bit I see that speedo and zoggs are in the market now.

I used to have dailies but took some solution and case to keep them if I had to take them out to shower

Much better than risking some god awful parasite that is going to eat your eyeball!

Doesn't matter how much you try and avoid water in your eyes when showering some is going to get in there

Absolutely don't shower with them in

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 02/10/2019 19:58

Why not get a little case and some saline solution? Would they be ok in a saline solution for the time you shower? I would have thought so.

I shower with them in but I’m extremely careful not getting water into my eyes. Several years ago I developed a corneal ulcer very rapidly after getting water in my eye (it dried the lens out). So now I often use moisturising eye drops for contact lens wearers and always have antibiotic eye drops. Issues can develop so quickly and escalate rapidly with eyes so it’s worth carrying these around in your bag.

I was much more gung-ho about showering and occasionally swimming in mine until I developed a corneal ulcer. The optometrist gave me a stern warning.
Very careful now.

redcrayons I used to do the glass of water and the licking thing too. So bad!

illbeinmybunk · 02/10/2019 21:28

Please don't shower in contact lenses! Google Acanthamoeba Keratitis, it's grim!

MargieMo · 02/10/2019 21:33

Wow...I never knew about those risks. I wear them for gym, running, etc. Shower afterwards, and leave them in a few hours afterwards

ExpletiveDelighted · 02/10/2019 21:42

I always take mine out for showering and swimming, its just not worth the risk. If I run in the morning I wear my glasses and put my lenses in after showering, for evening exercise I just take them out first. If I do need to shower when wearing them I take them out but mine are monthly so I have all the stuff.

I have prescription swimming goggles, can't remember where from but you buy the lenses and strap separately and assemble them so you can have different strengths.

I wear my glasses in the shower if I need to shave my legs (I'm -12 so can't see much).
