Just that.

I see nothing wrong with calling her 'vile' - she is vile. She supports the death penalty and has been sacked for corruptly self advocating in illicit trade with the Israelis. That's pretty vile really. Referring to the 'liberal North London elite' - well, I know what I think about that.

To have the temerity to back the implementation of austerity for years. and all its horrific fall out - and then put in a bit of ££ and claim you are the party of law and order - that's more than vile - it's an outright effing lie.

GCAcademic · 02/10/2019 12:53

I find her stance quite interesting with respect to her family background - which is something (probably the only thing) which I actually share with her. The irony is that when her parents came to this country along with other East African Asians in the 1960s, people were clamouring to keep them out. It was the "liberal elite" which she's now deriding which argued against the social conservatives to allow them into the country.

In my experience, there is a great deal of resentment amongst some communities from former British colonies around free movement of people from the EU when several immigration acts in the 1960s curtailed the previous rights of former British subjects to settle here. In some cases (Kenyan Asians, for example) people were effectively rendered stateless by the (Labour) government stripping their right of settlement from them. That free movement of people from the EU was then allowed within a couple of decades did not go down well, and made Britain's immigration policy appear manifestly racist. When Patel talks about freedom of movement, I can't help but see the sad spectacle of one immigrant community pitted against another. Divide and rule has always been what the Tories do best.

Priti Patel is a successful woman with a great career, something we should all be applauding not insulting or dragging her down.

BertrandRussell · 02/10/2019 12:53

David Baddiel “Whether she knows it or not, "North London metropolitan liberal elite" is alt-right code - shit alt right code - for Jews. My mum was a refugee to this once tolerant country from Nazism. So this son of immigrants says - it's a short lecture - fuck off.”

Sorry, that was quoting @Soola who, if I'm not mistaken, is always all over the Megan Markle threads pointing out why she's worse than shite.

BertrandRussell · 02/10/2019 12:58

“Priti Patel is a successful woman with a great career, something we should all be applauding not insulting or dragging her down.”
Why should we applaud her simply because she’s a woman?

I'm not entirely sure how success fits in with being sacked for lying and only getting your job back because your boss is the most bumbling, foolish arse this side of the Atlantic!? Hmm

@MrsHardbroom not directed towards you btw!

violettrose28 · 02/10/2019 13:03

love her or hate her, she's got 'future Prime Minister' written all over her.
I said the same thing about Boris a decade ago and everyone laughed at me.

shushymcshush · 02/10/2019 13:03

Bravo @MrsMaiselsMuff nailed it!

Reallybadidea · 02/10/2019 13:04

I think the smug expression is just how her face sits when her mouth is closed. She looks the same in every picture I've seen.

Thegallofher · 02/10/2019 13:05

So easy to do the old ‘party of law and order’ routine. Yes, county lines needs sorting but not just banging up a few villains - what about the pathetic, crisis state of our looked after children? The appalling under-resourced system that allows children to go missing out of children’s homes to be preyed upon by these gangs? Not such a vote winner to put money into getting to the roots of the issue. Just posturing, empty words.

EssentialHummus · 02/10/2019 13:07

If you listen carefully you can still hear the sound of barrels being scraped. I can’t believe that this fool is a member of the government.

Orgyofsausages · 02/10/2019 13:07

MrsHardbroom don't be silly - lots of people can be successful in their career and still be a total c**t, can't they? Do you think that being a female means it's ok to be corrupt? are you a bit sexist like that?

MrsHardbroom · 02/10/2019 13:09

@Orgyofsausages I can't stand her Blush- I was quoting another post and hit send too soon

Orgyofsausages · 02/10/2019 13:10

I mean, Philip Green is fantastically successful but I'm guessing almost everyone would agree he is an utter bastard. no? should we applaud him for his go-getting ambition?

Orgyofsausages · 02/10/2019 13:12

Aah gotcha MrsH - no worries. Wink

Soola · 02/10/2019 13:16

@MrsHardbroom yes you are mistaken

Simonfromharlow · 02/10/2019 13:20

I don't like her but I live in her constituency and county lines are a massive massive problem. I'd be glad to see something done about it.

bumblingbovine49 · 02/10/2019 13:22

I caught part of her speech and whilst I am happy that she is doing something about the 'county lines' problem, I really cannot stand her. An example of why is this quote

'"This daughter of immigrants needs no lectures from the north London, metropolitan, liberal elite."

So staged and ridiculous and buying into so many stereotypes, I don't know where to start.

AppleKatie · 02/10/2019 13:25

It’s so disingenuous though- county lines are such a huge problem now precisely because of the Tory policies of the last several years.

If she’d been better at her job (and her predecessors too of course) then we wouldn’t need her to ‘get tough’ on it now.

Dissimilitude · 02/10/2019 13:26

I'm constantly amazed we focus on people / personalities so much, and don't look at underlying forces that are shaping the movement of politics to put people like Priti Patel, Trump, BJ in power. Some of you would rather just talk all day about how "vile" these people are without wasting a single though on how we got here.

It is not remotely an accident that the rise in outrage culture, shaming, and the strict control of acceptable narratives ("Immigration is always good!", "Diversity is Good!", "Thinking otherwise makes you Evil"), has coincided with a class of politicians that are immune / resistant to the traditional shaming tactics of the left.

The electorate know how shameless these people are. The electorate don't think the tories and Priti Patel are nice. The electorate are pivoting to people / parties that can resist the dominant progressive narrative.

Brexit was a a hand grenade thrown by the electorate designed to say "You didn't listen on immigration for 30 years. We're now willing to tear down a pillar of post-war UK policy - nothing is sacred unless you take action on this".

I see very few people on the left wrestling with this (perhaps John Harrison in the Guardian, or the economist Mark Blythe come close).

doublebarrellednurse · 02/10/2019 13:27

She is vile soz not soz.

She wants to bring back the death penalty - but only if we are really sure the baddies did it, but is fine with locking people up for lifetimes if we are mostly sure. 🤨

This speech just lays out more of her simpleton populist policy and opinion. Evil drug gangs 🙄 it's like she's the first one to think about the "war on drugs". There was nothing to substantiate how she would do anything differently to the last 20 years of wasted money. Evidence base would tell her it's a waste of time. Lots of people have better ideas that have evidence bases in other countries.

She's just, well, she reminds me of that American woman from Alaska who preached all kinds of things in government but clearly didn't understand much

MrsHardbroom · 02/10/2019 13:33

@Soola apologies for mistaken identity. But not going to cheerlead for PP as a 'successful woman' when her stated aims as HS remove that opportunity for many others.

CendrillonSings · 02/10/2019 13:37

In the meantime, the Shadow Home Secretary was taking PMQs in Corbyn’s place. She had just one job - to ask 6 questions. You can guess how that turned out...

... she rose to ask a 7th and had to be told off by John Bercow! Grin

viaLatvia · 02/10/2019 14:13

She is a strong woman from a non-white, non-Christian background who is very successful. Surely she should be seen as a role model of what disadvantaged women can achieve in this country. I think she's excellent!
