Help! What should I do with this butterfly?

There's a butterfly on my kitchen window that's trying to get out. Two problems - I'm phobic of them and can't get close to it.

Two- it's freezing and pissing down here. If it goes out I think it'll die.

What do I do?

It won't die if you let it out. They're much tougher than they look. Some of them migrate!

Looks like a small tortoiseshell butterfly - let it out if you can. It's time for it to hibernate

Leave it there until you wake up in the morning. It will be slumbering. Open the window and wait for it to fly out.

A few years ago several of them chose our barn to hibernate. I had to and check every day, and let them out. There were over twenty in the end, they appeared one or two a day.

I had one in my kitchen and it sat on my hand till I got it out. Obviously you can’t do this!

It vanished at some point yesterday. Not sure it if went out or if its somewhere in my house.
