What monsters lived in your house when you were young?

I had some kind of monsters under my bed. Not sure what type as I always protected myself fully at night: Under sheets, nothing exposed.

There was also a spider monster who lived down the toilet and round a few bends. The flush was his signal there was a possible victim in the bathroom so I had to flush and get out by the time the flushing had stopped. Oh, did I mention he rode a motorbike?

The water monster, who would grab you if you didn't get down the stairs quickly enough whilst the flush was flushing...

The black monster who slid out of the grating in the wall late at night, but you were safe if the grating door was tight shut, so that had to be checked every night.

The monster who lived at my Grandmother's house in a large box of black ostrich feathers. I remembered him when I cleared out Granny's house! Eeekkk!

Holymolly · 30/09/2019 21:21

A gorillas hand that would come from under my bed to grab me unless I was tucked in properly.
And a snake in the toilet that would bite my bum if I didn't jump off quick enough.

then cut the tree in our back garden down

You must have really loved that tree Grin

ChipsAndKetchup · 30/09/2019 21:26

The monster that would be stood behind me if I looked in the bathroom mirror.

Cue years of avoiding my own reflection - but only in that one mirror.

iMatter · 30/09/2019 21:29

The actual shark from Jaws lived under my bed.

The only way I could protect myself was to look under the bed and say "Go back to the ocean" every night....

halfmoonbay · 30/09/2019 21:32

Witches under my bed, I would have to launch myself into bed from halfway across the room. Jaws hiding behind the u bend waiting to bite my bum.

There was also a spider monster who lived down the toilet and round a few bends. The flush was his signal there was a possible victim in the bathroom so I had to flush and get out by the time the flushing had stopped.

There was a monster in our toilet too. If it was nighttime, i had to get back under the covers before the flush finished. If it was daytime, i had to get to the bottom of the stairs - the quickest method of which was to jump down to each of the landings missing all steps in between. It was also a lot quicker if you didn't bother shutting the toilet door and certainly no hand washing.

My Dad did not believe in the monster and told me to desist of these activities. On the first day of shutting the toilet door, i was greeted by a cheshire-cat-style grinning spider the size of my hand sat atop the toilet roll holder. I screamed and screamed until my Dad flung open the door and pulled me out.

Not only did the monster-scaring activities resume, but i enlisted the help of my younger brother too. Never saw another enormous spider in the toilet again, so it clearly worked.

My parents.

My mother did tell me about the more usual type of childhood monster when I was about 4. I was a very hyperactive child that slept little, and frequently either got up and played unnoticed, or went back outside via the window and came back via the door when I was tired without anyone caring. On one particular occasion my mother was trying to impress her guests and put me to bed with the threat there were bears and wolves outside, and monsters on the stairs when it got dark. Naturally I went via the window to find the bears and wolves and was hugely disappointed not to find any.

BarbedBloom · 30/09/2019 22:02

The attic monster. The hatch was right up above the upstairs landing outside my bedroom drawer and I used to dream about it dragging me up there and eating me. A few times I came out in the middle of the night and found the hatch open. Now I think one of my parents must have had to go up there, but at the time I was terrified.

Oh and a monster that floated outside my bedroom window and sometimes peeped at me from mirrors in dark rooms. If I looked into the mirror at night then he would get me. To this day I still can't look into a mirror in a dark room or out of a window at night

BarbedBloom · 30/09/2019 22:02

Bedroom door even

Jocasta2018 · 30/09/2019 22:16

I had to sleep with the covers well over my head & no bit of me exposed as the Daleks & Cybermen were out to get me. Didn't matter whether I'd watched Dr Who recently. Once watched, Daleks/Cybermen never forgotten.
The noise the bin lorry made used to terrify me - thought it was going to crush us all...

motortroll · 30/09/2019 22:16

The Incredible Hulk under my bed, a snake in the toilet and a witch in the wardrobe. I could actually see the witches shadow at night but it was probably a tree outside the window!

PlasticPatty · 30/09/2019 22:18

I saw demons. With my eyes closed and with my eyes open.

Beamur · 30/09/2019 22:21

So many.
A sea monster which would swim up the toilet, a giant looking through my window, a crocodile under my bed and a lion on my covers.
So many rituals to be followed to keep safe.
Flowersfor the kids with real monsters.

Violetparis · 30/09/2019 22:27

A badger lived under my bed and I was frightened of putting my feet out onto the floor in case it would get me.

RippleEffects · 30/09/2019 22:33

Jesus was my childhood monster. I had a very devout teacher and my parents hadn't introduced me to anything church. I took her Jesus is always watching you, very much to heart. I had terrible nightmares for years about the man Jesus watching my every move and that any tiny fault I made I'd be struck by lightning.

TonOfLead · 30/09/2019 23:06

I also had a toilet monster that was summoned by the flush. But only when it was dark outside.

There were also vampires.

And rabid dogs.

Ozgirl75 · 01/10/2019 02:23

I had a blue hand that would come up the back of my bed and reach around for me. This lasted until we moved house when I was 7 and thank goodness blue hand didn’t follow me to the new house.

Also unspecified ghosts.

We moved from a modern house to a 500 year old cottage and there wasn’t a single monster at the new place.

Weirdly my two children seem to have totally bypassed the monster and ghost phase. I wonder if children’s tv is just less scary these days as the only thing they have short term feared is Spooky Spoon (Numberjacks) and the girls from Bravery Badge (Creeped Out).

I feel like I was constantly aware of ghostly things as a child, whereas my two just go through life going to bed with wardrobe doors open a crack, sometimes hide under their own bed Shock, cope with occasional possums scratching in the loft with a shrug. It’s so weird of them.

Sweetpea55 · 01/10/2019 02:39

A big brown piece of leather that would flap around the ceiling.

Tavannach · 01/10/2019 03:06

There were bears that lived on the landing. I never saw them but they scared my little brother so much he couldn't go to bed.

FurrySlipperBoots · 01/10/2019 03:08

We had this stupid bloody hat stand type coat rack that stood in the entrance hall. There was definitely a baddie there under all the coats. My sister and I were both terrified of it. I must have been turned 10 before I could just walk past it normally. I don't know why our parents didn't just replace it with ordinary wall hooks, it would have saved so much stress!

I can't remember any others in the house, but we used to go for walks around the suburban neighbourhood on Friday and Saturday evenings. There were witches up nearly all of the trees that shadowed the pavement, waiting to pounce. I actually just shuddered remembering them now!

FurrySlipperBoots · 01/10/2019 03:10

Oh, of course 'Under the bed' is always a creepy spot. I didn't feel fully comfortable with it until I got my house rabbit. He was a blooming fierce bunny and would have made short work of any monsters invading his territory, so then I knew I was safe!

awkwardturtle · 01/10/2019 03:14

Hands coming up from under the bed to grab me. Still can't sleep with my hands outside the duvet! Wink
