Help! How do I turn off my gas fire?!!

Switched on the gas fire for the first time in our rental property and can't turn it off!!! I've attached a photo of the control on the side that we used to switch it on. Can't turn it off!! Any ideas? I'm melting!

No that just makes it hotter but doesn't come off!!

Carry on lifting it up. it will make tbe flames go higher. then a bit more up and it should go off.

Phew! Needed a bit of brute force but did it in the end! Thanks, I would have melted my face off!! I knew Mumsnet would see me right....

Oh I hope you manage to turn it off.

Yes maybe it’s one of those that goes higher then off.

I nearly had (yet another) nervous breakdown last year when I had a new gas cooker installed. They left the grill and oven going full tilt as you’re supposed to, to clear the pipes or somesuch.

When it came to turning it off half an hour later, I couldn’t, and totally panicked. Called out the gas emergency people, and eventually the installers as well.

Turns out you take it to via highest setting before it goes off. I have never seen that on an oven or grill before. What a divvy. 🥵 Blush
