Special present idea needed!

It's my friend's 30th soon - we've known eachother for 20 odd years, and I want to get him something special but not predictable. I know his girlfriend has got him a watch, so not that. Something out the box would be good.

Info: he's a doctor, likes travelling, recently got his own place, no kids. He's not had the easiest time and his friends are like his family - he's worked so hard to get to where he is and needs treating.

Any ideas??

Budget?

Bobbiepin · 28/09/2019 21:33

That would help. Max £200 ideally around £100

If he wears other things like cufflinks how about a nice box to put them in.

If he likes travelling how about a really smart passport cover or washbag - smythson have some stuff in your price range.

Not a big cufflink wearer. He wears shirts to work when not in scrubs but no cufflinks because he has to be bare below the elbow.

I was hoping for something individual, like an engraved stethescope (was my original plan but he has a really expensive one so don't wanna get one that's not as good). Doesn't have to be medical related though

Personally I would lease with the girlfriend.

You don’t want to ‘top’ her gift and she might have some ideas as to what he would love.

A day driving a racing car around a circuit or Land Rover off road.

Silk or cashmere scarf.

AdaColeman · 28/09/2019 21:59

A good quality weekend bag.

Is there such a thing as airline vouchers?

Sn0tnose · 28/09/2019 22:02

Not on the High Street has got some nice things in their ‘gifts for him’ section. There is a nice leather satchel he could use for work, or a weekend bag, or a wine carafe and cheeseboard.

The best thing I’ve seen on there is a vinyl record by Mixpixie. You choose six songs or send in a recording, and then choose the lp cover and they’ll put it all on vinyl for you. It’s £100. If you’ve known him for all that time, there have got to be lots of songs that make you instantly think of fun things you’ve done together and Argos do turntables for £30 if he’s not got any vinyl.

So another friend and I are doing an experience thing with him (we do somehing for each of our birthday's each year) so would ideally like to get him a physical thing.

Girldfriend is pretty recent, she's lovely and I hope she sticks around. I'm not intending to top her gift, I want it to be completely platonic if that makes sense?

@AdaColeman I was thinking that, it could be a fall back if nothing else.

Mont Blanc pen?

Bobbiepin · 28/09/2019 22:15

@Sn0tnose the vinyl thing is a lovely idea although I'm not sure where i'd start!! Cheeseboard made me think chess board, which I think he'd like. Totally open to other ideas though.

Mont blanc pen is a good idea but he'd probably loose it! Doctors are notorious for stealing other people's pens and although I'd hope he'd keep an eye on it, understandably work gets busy.

Cashmere scarf, leather gloves, leather bag - a really nice version of something he uses often anyway.

cultkid · 28/09/2019 22:20

Hot blanket for when he gets home from some really long days at hospital
