How much coffee is too much?

I've recently discovered the joys off coffee and it's not become pretty much essential at keep me awake and functioning during the day.

I am, however, a bit worried that I drink too much! I usually stick to no more than 3, maybe occasionally 4 if I'm feeling particularly tired but I'm wondering if this is still too much? I don't want to end up addicted and with withdrawal symptoms if I don't have any one day!

How much is too much?

10 double espressos a day is too much
3-4 cups of coffee a day is fine unless you have a specific medical condition or are pregnant when there is a lower recommended amount
people who drink either tea or coffee often have what you do a day
a drink with breakfast, one mid morning another after lunch and another after dinner, many people will have one mid afternoon too
I drink a large mug of coffee for breakfast and another when I start work sometimes one mid morning and another after lunch if I drink coffee after 4pm I drink de-caff

I drink loads of coffee, have done so for decades - four single espressos before I leave the house at 7:30am, probably eight on an average day, sometimes more, sometimes less. I never drink decaf.

I used to drink 4 cups a day but then i had to give up cold turkey after my heart went crazy after a broken rib (i had some caffiene withdrawal symptoms but i think its down to each person whether they would or not) , i m back to my normal self now but don't want to get hooked again so i stick to decaf.

Similar to a PP. I used to drink loads until I got an erratic heartbeat. Went straight onto decaff with amazingly no withdrawal effects. Still got the erratic heartbeat - the medical profession seem divided as to whether or not caffeine makes a difference, but I'll stay off it.

(And I do realise that decaff coffee contains a small amount of caffeine)

Lemononachair · 28/09/2019 22:14

I don't actually enjoy the taste of coffee, I only drink it for the buzz of the caffeine! So I never have decaf.

I tend to prefer the short, strong coffees like espresso or flat whites, so I'm having maybe 5 shots in a day near enough?

Can't have it after about 7/8pm though or I'm up till silly o'clock.

I used to drink a lot of coffee. It started giving me what I affectionately refer to as coffee enemas. Beware. It's a stimulant in THAT way too.

I now drink no more then two strong cups of a morning and none thereafter.

TheAlternativeTentacle · 28/09/2019 22:37

i used to get a coffee from a place a few doors down from work and the whole of my admin team banned me from going there.

I saw research which said up to about 20 a day didnt affect whatever it was they were researching.

So my 3 a day is totally fine i guess.

TeacupDrama · 29/09/2019 17:56

It's like a lot of things fine in moderation
1-2 glasses of wine per person with dinner fine 1-2 bottles per person not fine
2 slices of toast for breakfast 2 slices of bread for a sandwich later fine 1 loaf per day just silly
1 can of coke probably OK but as a dentist I don't like it 2 litres a day and you'll have no enamel soon even if sugar free

Moominfan · 29/09/2019 17:58

2-3 max if I can spread it out enough. Any more or on an empty stomach I give myself an anxiety attack

I'm a confessed sparkling water addict. Flavoured 1litre bottle a day Blush

I was having 10 cups a day easily.

But now I’m pregnant, and I have to say I absolutely struggled to stick to one maybe two cups a day. Decaf just doesn’t cut it for me.

I bloody love coffee... and I love gin and tonic.

One day DD will probably throw a tantrum and tell me I don’t love her. I will sit her down and name all the lovely things I had to give up for 9 months while she was growing strong and healthy.

I’m going to tell her that if In fact I did not love her she would be born a cyclops with only 3 fingers on each hand because I didn’t bother to cut our coffee and gin. Grin
