Any ideas what this might be ? (Photo)

For context ...

My great granda was a salmon fisher, in highlands of Scotland (near Inverness ish). Rest of family were/are gamekeepers on glen, mainly dealing with grouse and deer I think .

This (pictured) is has been in my mam’s house for years - no one can work out where it came from or what it’s for .

Label is no use just says for repairs to phone x person in caravan on the left in the ‘glen’ (no mention of which one) , and it’s dated to 1977 .

We are wondering what on earth it could be! Thinking it will be for fishing but not sure at all, relative thought maybe something for a telescope or a vice of some sort (if you twiddle it bits do loosen off) .

Just wondering if any MNerrs have any good ideas !! It’s got a green base to it as well (like what you get under posh coasters etc, which made family think it’s probably quite valuable/old)

Possibly with bits missing!

Sure it’s not for making fishing flies with? The ‘sight’ bit so you can to do the fiddly bits?

tootiredforyourshit · 28/09/2019 16:31

The green baize base indicates it's meant for indoors rather than outdoors. It looks like some kind of sight aligner.

Just shown it to H ex gamekeeper and keen on fishing . He immediately said it's for tying fishing flies. Although the clamp is missing.

Think it's for making fishing flies.
