I just love them, how do you find it ? Does yours walk nicely on the lead ?

Huskies need to live in pairs . They should not be kept as singular pets.

MrsGrindah · 27/09/2019 20:40

I can’t remember why. I spent time on the husky pound near Scarborough and they were very upset about the number of Huskies that are indoor singular pets. Also they need to run not just walk everyday. They can turn .But they are gorgeous though.

Windydaysuponus · 27/09/2019 20:45

Here is mine!
Also have 3 other ddogs..
She is very much walked /goes running /scooter.
And well loved!!

They need to be properly run every day their hair blows twice a year the animal shelters are overrun with them because their rehabilitation is not easy and through that in my opinion are not suitable as an indoor pet

GeoffreyAndBungle · 27/09/2019 20:51

No experience but the only 2 families I've known who got huskies found them very difficult and ended up giving them away ☹️

ButterflyWitch · 27/09/2019 20:56

Look at northern Inuits instead. Much more domestic/family friendly imo. Still need lots of attention, training, walks etc but amazing animals

megletthesecond · 27/09/2019 20:57

The people I know with huskies, and the dogs who looks like huskies, are the ones who run to parkrun and lead the race with the dog pulling them.
Don't they have to walk miles a day or something?

Mskatonic · 27/09/2019 21:07

We never encounter huskies off the lead, they look like a real handful with poor recall so always pulling their owner around on the lead. I think you have to be the sort of person who runs, walks miles, or works them in order to give them the exercise they need. They are beautiful dogs but I think very impractical as a normal family pet.

ClaraTA · 27/09/2019 21:13

I have a husky x collie and she is wonderful. Her recall is poor and she can get anxious so she needs extra support/focus (she is also a rescue so I suspect this plays into it). Amazing with children, so affectionate and intelligent. Huskies do need extra mental stimulation and enjoy being occupied, they make amazing companions. My best friend has a husky, who is now best buddies with mine. They love walking together 🙂 Check out the Siberian husky association, there'slots of info available from them.

JumpyLiz · 27/09/2019 21:18

Our neighbour has two huskies, they are beautiful dogs but look like very hard work.
He lets them pull him with a fancy harness and panniers, while he cycles, he also 'walks' them (ie gets pulled at 15mph). They cannot ever be let off lead, they have zero recall and would just try to run to the North Pole if let off Grin

He does groom them outside, tied to a post in the field opposite our houses once every few weeks- no word of a lie, for a few days it looks like a sofa has been unstuffed Grin

At 4:30 every weekday afternoon without fail they start howling, full on AROOOOO, in preparation for him coming home at 5pm.

Having said that, they are gorgeous, soft, friendly beauties. Just glad they're not mine!

Booboostwo · 27/09/2019 21:26

What do you live about them?

Huskies are not a breed, they are a lifestyle. The people I know who keep them successfully plan a lot of their lives around their dogs. They need an enormous amount of exercise at a very fast pace. They need a very secure garden as they can both climb up fences and dig under them. They tend to howl so better suited to homes with no neighbours. They have no recall and, once off, will just run in a straight line.

ifoundthebread · 27/09/2019 21:26

I have a husky staffy Cross, is built like a staffy with husky fur, lots and lots of fur 😒 I'm onto my third hoover in 5 years. Walked like a dick head on the lead until we got a second dog, now he walks lovely unlike dog2 . In general he is a lovely dog, really chilled out, isn't the most sociable creature as he rather walk to the side of a pack rather than with it but will play with other dogs if the mood takes. He's really clever, quite easy to train but obviously needed time putting into him, can't fault him with my kids.

BarbedBloom · 27/09/2019 21:30

I love them, but have never got one because of how much work they are. My friend who has two does iron man and marathons and takes her huskies with her on the runs and biking and they still have an unbelievable amount of energy. She is also constantly training them and giving them things to do. One day she was slightly late back, normally only leaves them for an hour maximum and one of them pretty much ate her sofa.

Do a lot of reading and research and be prepared to spend a lot of time exercising them and working them

Windydaysuponus · 27/09/2019 21:30

Mine is very well behaved!! Walks lovely on a lead. Doesn't bark or howl. Our garden is 10 foot walled. Goes running with ds every day. Beach walk for 2 hours every day too. Very loving and gentle. Not a huge appetite, loves veg too!

Fuma · 27/09/2019 21:36

I've only ever seen them with chavs and junkies. Round this way they've kind of taken over the position previously filled by "staffies" in that sense. So if you're a chav or a junkie then go for it.

Windydaysuponus · 27/09/2019 21:40

Fuma I am neither....

Fuma · 27/09/2019 21:42

Cool.

rededucator · 27/09/2019 21:48

Now that people have realised Staffies are big babies, husky type dogs are the new status dog where I live. And I'm sure they aren't getting the care that PP are giving theirs unfortunately.

sheshootssheimplores · 27/09/2019 21:51

Fuck no.

Kpo58 · 27/09/2019 21:55

I'd say that they are best kept with a non husky type dog with good recall so that you can use their pack instinct to your advantage. Call the other dog and the husky will come back too. They do need loads of exercise through.

Lardlizard · 27/09/2019 22:00

Windy yours looks like he’s acting like a baby !! 😂😂

I have a husky crossed with a japanese akita, she's three and a half and yes, she is hard work.
She has a lovely, docile temperament around the children but she can be too playful with other dogs even on the lead and she can jump up at strangers playfully even though we have tried to train it out of her.
Obviously we love her but I wont be getting another husky type, she needs lots of walking and she sheds sooooo much hair.
Think long and hard, they are a big commitment, more so than other breeds I feel.

CruCru · 27/09/2019 22:10

I have a ridiculous question about huskies - don't they get hot? I'd thought that they were bred to live in northern Sweden etc and therefore would find our summers unbearable.

Booboostwo · 28/09/2019 06:29

OP your replies are worrying, are you reading the posts? Get a German Spitz if you want and you can do 😍 at it all day long.
